IRC 30D (in case anyone doesn't know) is the IRS Plug-In Electric Drive Vehicle Credit code. I pre-ordered asap online the night of the reveal (est. around 100k or a little below) so I wasn't worried about it running out or getting less than the full credit before. However now I'm wondering/worried about whether Donald Trump or the Republican led House and Senate have a way to abolish IRC 30D before the Model 3 even comes out.

I wasn't able to find any information about how IRC 30D was passed or came to be and that I think is the key to whether or not it could be changed/removed early. Anyone have any insight into this?

I think most any tax code can be revised, revoked, amended by going thru congress and being signed by the president
there were many threats made regarding renewable energy credits (i.e. solar), and just because the EV credit was written to be limited to x number of vehicles per mfr, I do not expect there is ever anything written in the tax code saying it can not be changed in the future.

ETA... honestly though, I think he's made a pretty long laundry list of our current laws/treaties/accords he plans to destroy to be too concerned on this one before we all take possession (and claim the credit!!)

That, and this credit already has an ending criteria. And if EVs continue to become popular, all of the other automakers will want it to remain in effect so that they can benefit after Tesla no longer can.

I'd hope that once you've taken delivery they couldn't deny anyone that credit. As stated EV tax credits are still fairly low on the public's radar and I've never heard them mentioned in US sound-bytes or talking points.

I'm pretty nervous about the entire situation going on. I'm hoping he doesn't wreck climate change initiatives as they're actually creating the jobs he's preached about. I do agree I think they're low priority at this point, I've never heard a politician going on about how much money could be saved by not giving EV credits. Provided this stuff has to go thru Congress I think it's safe. It's confusing what has go to thru congress and what he can do by executive action.

Congress will be 100% at his disposal, so going then congress will pose no more of an issue than if it were an Executive Order
@WaitingForTesla - the tax credit would not be a lock until you have your return submitted and accepted. When you purchase will not guarantee it.

If you look at the IRS website this section was part of the energy improvement and extension act of 2008. Like any act in the US it was passed by the houses of congress and signed by the president. It has been ammended and could be repealed. Trump cant change it by executive order. There are other measures he can take that scare me. For the tax credit to end congress would have to make it a priority. Being canadian I dont know.how quickly they would act, i suspect the health care act is top of their list and they would have to come up with something else before scrapping that. There also will be push back from states that have job growth tied to green industries. One of many unknowns.

Congress will be so tied up trying, and failing, to replace ACA that they will not have time for anything else.

Hence why I use the word hope. That would really suck if I ordered it knowing I would get at least something back and it all fell apart in the 6 months following.

Folks all we need to do is arrange a Tesla factory tour and test drive for trump and gang. I am quite certain he will become a supporter. Think strategically ... if you can't beat em join em sort of thinking.

I could care less if the credit is stopped or not. I put my deposit down based on "can I afford the car" without the credit. You should never depend on free money to buy something.
