Elon apparently said first production model 3 buyers will have two choices, color and wheels. We know that first production cars will have only the larger battery. However, does that mean that all first production cars will be loaded with Enhanced AutoPilot, glass roof and/or any other options they decide to make available? Or does that mean that the first production cars will have none of these options? Or, for that matter, does it mean something I am missing? As I was in line the day of the reveal and live in California, first production cars have important meaning to me.

Please be aware that any answer we give is purely speculation.

That said, the rumors are that the first cars will have the large battery, but only be rear-wheel drive. No P (performance) version either. Take a look at the comparison sheet that Tesla has published. It suggests that at least the initial versions of the Model 3 will have coil suspension, no bioweapon-defense filtration system, and probably a metal roof to start (since it says glass will be optional).

We know that all Model 3's will be equipped with Autopilot hardware. At that point, it's just a matter of paying to have autopilot turned on for each and every vehicle. Therefore, I expect both "autopilot" and "full-self driving" to be options available on every vehicle, since it doesn't require any change in hardware. I think Elon was stretching the truth just a tad when he said that the only options would be color & wheels.

First production cars will go only to Tesla employees. That has already been stated. EM is being coy with his revelations. He is being honest, but he is not stating the complete truth.

I think he was oversimplifying when he said you can choose your colors and wheels. Just trying to make the point that the options are limited. I don't know why the glass roof would not be availavble since the majority of the RC's have this.

In the end none of us know and we're all going to find out in a July. Elon also said "simplest", so that doesn't imply loaded, but...

Also as others have said, bigger battery confirmed.

    RWD confirmed.

    No "P" confirmed.

We also don't know who and what is getting these early cars. That could be Tesla employees and then we're all getting wider option ranges. We simply don't know and all want to know!

I think the Initial cars will be loaded with every feature (into a package maybe called premium) that does not affect the production ramp. Tesla needs to maximize revenue to the extent possible in order to not adversely affect gross margins.

Tesla (Elon) has said there will be a Performance version, with it's deliveries starting early 2018 (said in March they would start delivering in about a year).

Disappointing, I didn't think we would have to wait another 1 1/2 to 2 years for the all wheel drive version of the model 3. Maybe this is Elon's way of directing us to the Model S perhaps?

It will be interesting to see how soon additional options are made available. Getting the max tax credit is top priority for me.

It is possible the initial production MAY have some higher end options on it, you just wouldn't have the ability to opt out. It really depends on the complexity of the option as they're really going for simplicity so they ramp up quick. However by the time most of us get to configure I'd expect there to be more selection as the first 10k~ are going to Tesla and Space X employees. That 10k will probably take into the fall to produce.

Was it confirmed when in July the Model 3 configuration will be available? I don't recall...

I believe Elon Musk is pushing model S sedan sales as well as clear out off lease teslas...

No awd...two choices being color and wheel size...

Again to annoy buyers and motivate them to the model S off lease vehicles or new S models...whose sales have gotten soft as the model 3 release approaches..

How better to try and properly position the lower cost model 3....in the line up with the S class as the luxury leader...

Rumors are the model S sales have been way softer than previously announced.

If the model 3 release vehicles were all wheel drive with the 75 kw battery and larger wheels...I would have taken delivery...

I wer I feel tesla employees will be buying their vehicles or if they are a company perk like BMW offers its employees..and then BMW sells those vehicles in six months as program vehicles never registered so the next owner gets a full warranty

No. you can keep saying it, but that's not going to make it true. Tesla's employees will be paying for their cars full price just like everyone else.

The "pick a color and wheels" comment basically describes the new package based Model S / X configurator that is being A/B tested right now. I imagine just the "Standard" package will be available day 1, with the other options visible, but not available until later on. Excited to see what's included in each package. With any luck some of the software features like autopilot and/or enhanced autopilot will be included for free (unlikely, but we can dream!).

I said BMW offers some of its employees BMW 3 series for free and a buddy of mine says his BMW 7 series costs him 150 a month...

My neighbor was head of BMW motorcycle racing or something like that as well. I had another friend who was head of BMW public relations ...

What tesla does is certainly a case of who the hell knows...

I would have thought tesla employees would get at least something like GM
, Ford and Chrysler offers with huge employee discounts...

If not? Then too bad for tesla employees.?

I would think since they can't get the options they might want...and are required to be part of an early fleet ..that they would get a substantial discount at the very least...

Do they get to be guinea pigs for free?

Who said they were required to be part of an early fleet? They get the opportunity to go first. That's a very different distinction. It's a thank you to them for working hard on delivering the car. In turn yes, they realize they're the early adopters in the event there are any issues.
