This week, Daimler announced its plan to transition to greener technologies over the next few years. The company laid out release schedules for several new hybrids, plug-in hybrids, fuel cell vehicles, and all-electric vehicles across all its brands.

The plan is a little all over the place but we try to summarize it below and if that’s not enough for you, you can dive into the full press package further down. more…

The plan might be "all over the place", but I think this "shotgun" approach is the correct short-term solution. There are still many people who do not yet understand or trust all-electric vehicles. There are still many people for whom an electric vehicle is not yet appropriate (due to cost or range shortcomings). Hybrids will suite these people just fine, and act as the "gateway drug" to get them to understand and accept all-electric vehicles in the future.

Tesla is also doing an incredible job of making electric cars desirable. That is the main thing that will get more people to consider electrics. Here's hoping that DB will quickly decide that they too can create a good-looking all-electric. It doesn't appear to be in their immediate plans (the B-class and Smart cars don't count).

Anyone who has not watched to the shareholder meeting video, it's worth it just to hear about Tesla's involvement in the Smart car EV.
In typical crazy fashion, tesla offered to show MB they could convert a Smart car to electric. This was in October and MB would be in CA at the beginning of the year. Smart cars were not sold in US, so they needed to buy one in Mexico, bring it back and rebuild it in a matter of months. IIRC this was before the S was in production.
