Anyone know if we can just sit on our reservation for a while when it's ready for us to order? It's possible I'll be purchasing a new home around the time my number comes up. Obviously I'll want put off financing a new car till after I've applied for a home loan. Hoping I can just sit on it and not lose my place in line...

If it is like the S or X reservations, yes, you can sit on the reservation. But there has been some speculation that with the 3, you will only be able to defer your reservation a single time though.
Either way, once invited to configure, your place in production really will depend on who confirms their order first. So if you do wait, your production spot isn't going to wait for you, but you should be able to get into the queue once you do finalize your configuration.

Those before you and after you will have taken delivery of cars, so you will essentially move up the queue when you return to place your order.

I remember reading when I reserved my Model 3, that one can defer the order for a year... Although now I look again, I cant find anything to verify this... perhaps its changed, perhaps my memory is not so good...

I'm sure you can defer your reservation...

There are 400,000 reservations....it'll be a long time before your order comes up as it is...

Your smart to hold off adding debt as you purchase a new home..

If I remember correctly the it was 27/33 and cars today still are our second largest purchase after our homes...

After your move into your home, see how your bills are etc and the. Decide..

I saw some guy is selling his reservation on eBay...

I will mention paying off the principle only portion of your mortgage was a righteous move back in the days of 8 or 9 percent interest rates...

Today the rates are so low it might not make sense...

Cars depreciate and are usually a six month high...homes tend to appreciate 4 percent a year..

Good luck and if you need a car check out these lease deals at www.legendleasing.com

They deliver right to your door...and all you do is pick the color. You can't beat these deals at any dealership..

Of course you may have to use a competitor to them in your area but you never know..

Have fun with your new home...

Interesting play seeing as how reservations are not transferable...

The "deferral" verbiage comes from the original Model S ordering agreement, but this term does not appear anywhere in the Model 3 reservation agreement, nor has any official source used the term "defer" in any communications about the Model 3.

I think what's happening is that early Model S owners are mentioning the "deferral" process (and its single-use restriction) that applied to their reservations from years ago, in response to questions about how early reservations were handled for the Model S. People then assume that the same process will apply to Model 3 reservations. As a result, you see a lot of forum-goers mentioning that they've "read" or "heard" about being able to "defer" your Model 3 reservation (and only one time), but none of them can point to a source that clearly states that this will be the case.

A lot has changed since Model S reservations opened up 8 years ago. The scale, production plan, and sales approach for the Model 3 are a completely different animal compared to the Model S (especially circa 2012), so I would not draw any conclusions about how early Model 3 reservations will be handled based on the policies and processes that applied to early Model S reservations.

I remember that too. The current Model 3 license agreement does not mention that.
I did find an older post in the Tesla forums with the original agreement.

The emphasis in the text below is mine.

    [QUOTE
    Deferral and Non-Transferability
If you do not wish to enter into a Purchase Agreement at the time that
    you are contacted by Tesla,
you have the option to relinquish your
reservation sequence position and defer to a later position to be
determined by us (only one deferral is permitted)
    . If you do not
communicate your decision to us within ten (10) days of notification
to place your order, you will automatically be granted your one
deferral and we will defer your reservation position. This Agreement
is not transferable or assignable to another party without the prior
written approval of a Tesla authorized representative.

Disclaimer: I am not @Gabzqc 's ex. With that said... :)

This Tesla forums post was made on March 21st, 2016, prior to the date Model 3 reservations opened up, and that the text of the "agreement" contained therein it is not the same as the Model 3 Reservation agreement that we received after reserving. Therefore, I would not call it the "original" agreement.

I reserved the morning of March 31st, and the reservation agreement that accompanied my email confirmation is attached. There is no language about "deferrals" or any limitations concerning how long you can hold onto your reservation without placing an order.

Given that the date-stamp at the bottom of the reservation agreement is March 25th, it's possible that the Tesla forums poster had access to a draft version of the agreement, which at the time was mostly a Model S reservation agreement with "Model 3" substituted for "Model S".... or it's possible that the poster made these changes him/herself to attract attention. Regardless, I would disregard the forum post and go by the actual agreement that we received directly from Tesla.

I spoke with Ben from Tesla chat and as far as I understood it, confirmed the option to delay until you are ready. I myself will need to delay due to a current lease not expiring for some time.

Once your reservation date comes up...I read somewhere that it would likely be about 6 weeks from your configuration date until you receive the car. During that time, financing and other things are finalized. So start the process about 6 weeks until you are ready.

Very comforting to see that Tesla won't be forcing us to complete the order within a certain time frame. Thanks PcGuy, for that information!

I was curious about this because I'm not sure when my ability to order will come up. But I must have dual motor AWD and subzero weather package. So there may be a lot of people also waiting on certain options/configurations to become available.

Dale, both of us being from Michigan, I'm holding out for AWD too to handle the bad winter days.

That's great Kenneth! This car with AWD will be unstoppable throughout the winter. The improved efficiency and range from the dual motors is an irresistible benefit as well. No other car manufacturer can compete with Tesla's dual-motor powertrain offering a zero-compromise AWD system that improves the car in so many ways. :car:

Up until recently, my wife didn't object to buying without test driving, but the times, they are a changin'. Now, it is a must to test drive a Model 3, but a simple run around the block will work. Since I have to factor the test drive into the equation...........................
