This guy is not only a visionary genius but is making science fiction become reality. I wish he’d explain however, how the huge kerosene burning rockets are going to avoid kicking out as much crap as ICE cars.
You don't have to completely eliminate fossil fuel burning. Just replace as much as practically possible. Elon's attempting to replace all uses for both electricity generation and transportation.
Rocket launches are one area where it's not going to be possible in the immediate future.
Indeed, just like understanding that building a network of tunnels, likely to require a lot of concrete, arguably not the most environmentally friendly, would have merits that largely outweigh drawbacks... in the grand scheme of things...
I love Musks idea's, but.... Wouldn't earth quakes be an issue? Just wondering.....

Rockets are big and impressive, but you have to remember that although road vehicles are smaller, there's almost 1 billion ICE vehicles, and many run on a daily basis. To kick out as much crap as ICE cars you would probably need to launch over 2,000 giant Big 'Falcon' Rocket (Interplanetary Transport System) each and every day (or something crazy like that, i'm throwing numbers here). Its going to take a long while for there to be just 1 Falcon 9 sized rocket a day or a couple BFR a year, and before we get close to daily rockets or several BFR a year, electric cars will have reduced current car ICE emissions by a lot imo.
Yeah, @Steve C , good question, already asked by many, yet interestingly not by the interviewer at the TED conference...?! Though this must be something Elon must have thought about! I wonder...
My question is that one car at a time elevator appears like a super bottleneck for the hundreds of commuters on multi lane ways that would like to cross the city to a destination, and a one mobile platform per car in the system appears quite expensive (and in some places you have a daily pattern where there's tons of cars going in one direction in the morning, so a lot of platforms would have to be returning to the front of the flow ). In rush hour, you would have a line up just having cars line up to directly enter the tunnel without waiting a single second for any elevator, the lineup for an entry elevator would be a crazy line up.
I understand that since the tunnels are narrow etc you dont want internal combustion engine cars in there, and you dont want accidents, and you dont want a car to run out of gas or electricity, which Im guessing is what prompted the mobile platform idea, but having main access entry/exit with cars entering or exiting directly down/up a slopping tunnel would be less of a bottleneck and more useful. Maybe tunnels (a few years from now) could be reserved for electric cars? (with autopilot to avoid accidents)
Mind blown! How does one person hold such a broad vision and yet know the technical details of all of them. So many highlights, Model 3 production July. Semi truck alpha exists and he drove it round the parking lot! It will replace most powerful diesels and have long range. Multi levels of tunnels, lined with Tesla glass? Target for ITS 8 yrs, larger rockets to come. Roof warranty longer than house. You would think it was all crazy but I just watched a rocket land and I am buying an electric car. Just living in the shadow of these dreams is so much fun.
