Following the Tesla Model 3 unveil in March, CEO Elon Musk said that a “part 2” unveiling event will follow “closer to production”, which is set to start in late 2017. He added that he expects the features that will be revealed at the event will significantly increase the number of reservations Tesla receives for the vehicle – the tally currently stands at close to 400,000 pre-orders.

Fully autonomous driving is expected to be the main new feature to be announced at the event and now Musk did everything but confirm it during a conference yesterday. more…

I think that fully autonomous driving in the general case is not going to happen soon. First there is the regulatory hurdle on a jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction level. Second there is, in my opinion, going to have to be qualifications of individual roadways as driveable autonomously. The Model 3 will likely have all the hardware necessary for autonomous driving, and that may be clear this month, but there is more to it than hardware.

Tesla will have cars all the necessary hardware to achieve this. Software will follow but they're also gathering fleet data so when regulation time comes they can drop that pile onto the desks and tell them it's safer.

Humans who think autonomous cars are not coming soon should give additional thought as to who is really seated behind the wheel when it comes to changing driving laws.

Once the insurance companies see the accumulated stats showing that autonomous cars have fewer accidents per mile than human drivers, they will lobby to change laws globally, knowing they have the adequate funding to do so out of savings from related cost reductions in both their accident case payouts and their accident claim review efforts.

"Dear Legislator X, this is your friendly constituent at Acme Beep-Beep Insurance Association. Kindly remember that surprisingly large donations can ensue once again for your important re-election campaign should we remain a profitable enterprise within your district.
So, please safeguard the people. Vote now to bring about improved driving laws enhancing safety in accord with twenty-first century levels. We've even made it quite simple via the enclosed recommended text for such legislation, as well as the sample campaign speeches, boasting how you are heroically and constantly working, exceedingly hard, to make your region the safest place on Earth."

Imagine (quite fleetingly) that the recalcitrant Legislator X, through sloth, or the evil influence of his cousin Bob at the nearby auto repair shop, or his fear that the dreaded Terminator will get loose upon the regional highways, instead votes "no," impairing additional campaign funding and nixing the new laws.

Then imagine this ad appearing 24/7: "Voting records show that Legislator X has refused to allow for proven safer vehicles to be available to citizens upon our local roads, endangering the lives of all concerned residents, including elderly mothers, countless helpless infants, and all of your future kin. Go to the polls immediately and drive Legislator X and his antiquated thinking into an early retirement. Vote as if both your life and the lives of all your loved ones depend upon it. The statistics prove that it's true!"
