I used non-Tesla public charging infrastructure for ~5 years with my Nissan Leaf. This was more difficult than using the Tesla charging infrastructure. The CHAdeMO locations generally only have one charging spot. If it is blocked or in use, you are out of luck. The stations are not as well maintained. Multiple times I have had to call the provider and have them remotely reboot the station before it would work. We've now made three road trips in our Tesla and the Superchargers are far easier to use. The "car is your card" system that Tesla uses means that we don't have to carry a half-dozen cards/fobs around and deal with card readers that may or may not work is a big plus. Full story here.
