EVs CO2 equivalent by State

    Those opposed to EVs often mention the car is still creating CO2, but at the power plant vs at the tail pipe. This recent article from the US DOE gives the average per state so you can get an idea of how your local power plant is doing.

    Best states based on pounds of CO2 equivalent for annual vehicle use
    1. Vermont <1 lb
    2. Washington State 987 lbs
    3. Idaho 1,179 lbs (based on the graphic, thinking they confessed Idaho with Iowa)
    4. Maine 1,559 lbs
    5. Oregon 1,644 lbs
    ...
    Worst states based on pounds of CO2 equivalent for annual vehicle use
    46. Utah 8,362
    47. Indiana 8,682 lbs
    48. Wyoming 8,823 lbs
    49. Kentucky 8,965 lbs
    50. West Virginia 9,451 lbs

    the averages out to 4,815 lbs vs an average ICE at 11,435 lbs

    so even the most coal burning states, still have a CO2 advantage over a gasoline engine car.

    1) Usually the people who make that argument don't care about CO2 emissions themselves, they just assume that you do and want to make your purchase decision appear to be not thought out.
    2) With a Tesla, we can just tell them that we don't care, and that our car will kick your Camaro's/Mustang's/Charger's butt.

    You might want to try using the tools I have posted above. They make it clear that predicting greenhouse gases according to state is artificial and inaccurate. Neither emissions nor electrons stop at any state's "borders." It is therefore much more reliable to calculate a vehicle's emissions according to utility region. Try it and see!

    but at the same time, your link groups UT and WY, both using primarily coal, together with OR and WA that primarily use hydro. how does that give a true picture? (fun fact, WA's hydro plants make up 1/4 of all hydro in the country with 8 of the 10 power plants being hydro)

    Heh. As the footnotes for that tool clarify, _I_ am not "linking" anything. Those are the 26 utility regions that the EPA designates to determine the greenhouse gas emissions in this country. Indeed, the EPA calculates the grams of CO2 per mile for EVs on its "Beyond Tailpipe Emissions" page according to those very utility regions. It makes perfect sense to me. My utility region NWPP stands for "North West Pacific Power," and in truth Warren Buffet's Pacific Power Corporation is one huge conglomerate that shares its electricity among its various subsidies. You can see, therefore, that the tool does give a "true picture" of the emissions in the NWPP region. Yes, UT dirties WA's grid with its coal (sorry!), but WA cleans UT's grid with its hydro (thank you!). As the tool states: neither electrons nor emissions hit a wall and stop at any state's borders.
