Was looking at the Google photos page when I picked up this photo, which is a side view of a Model 3. If you look closely, you will notice that the rear passenger's door handle is completely missing. This makes me wonder if durability will be an issue for the Model 3 because maybe this
guy was just tugging the door handle and it popped off? Or, maybe this car was for engineering validation and they were testing the door handle.

If you zoom in, you will notice the indent where the door handle is supposed to be

I don't think that's an indent. If the handle were truly missing the left part of this "indent" would have to be very deep, or more likely open to the interior of the door panel, so that the left part of the handle could rotate into the door as the right part is pulled out. Also there would have to be a hole for the connecting rod that actually opens the door. This is just a realy confusing looking reflection on a chrome door handle.

I am curious how the water will drain from the handle hole. Can't wait for the first ice storm where I cannot open my car door. I still love it but worry about these things.

This is actually something I'm quite worried about as well... as those of us up here in Canada those, we can get some rather nasty winters. Ice storms, heavy snow falls, extreme cold temperatures. There have been more times than I care to count where on any of my previous ICE cards (pardon the pun) I've had to literally PRY OPEN a driver door with both hands, cause everything was frozen solid after having been parked overnight, for example. On occasion, I remember even having successfully gotten the passenger door open, and having to shove the driver door open from the inside!

Needless to say... I have a hard time imagining that those simple (albeit gorgeous) door handles would be strong enough to provide enough support while heaving away at a frozen door.

Similarly... the charge port cover? Uhm... does anyone else have any concerns about how flimsy that looks? Again, thinking of the wintertime, I can just imagine the motor trying to pop open the port door, only to be faced with resistance of 2 inches of ice and snow.

    image1.JPG image2.PNG

Has anyone heard of any plans that Elon & Telsa Team have for winter customers? My understanding is that there won't be any specific Winter Package (yet), and that most of those features would be included in the Premium Upgrade, which is fine... but does anyone know if the door handles or the charge port door/hinge would be part of a pre-heated feature?

It would be cool if the premium came with a heated charge port door and heated door handles....

I agree that first photo could easily be just an unfortunate reflection on the handle. But this second shot doesn't answer the question after all. It is PROBABLY the same car from a different angle. But it was DEFINITELY taken at a different time or day. Notice the wheels are rotated in a different angle. Even more telling are the cars parked in the background.

That's what preconditioning the car is for. If the ice doesn't fall off completely it will at least be very loose.

That has happened for me on the S. I banged on it (with my soft hand) and got the ice to break eventually. I learned an obvious lesson the hard way -- don't go through a car wash when its really cold out or your handles may freeze shut.

If that will be a problem, Tesla will release an app update that allows unlatching doors with phone.
M3 doors do not use mechanical cables to unlatch the lock. Electrical actuator. Therefore can be actuated by app/swipe.

@TrevP do the door handles require two hands to open the door or does the handle stay sticking out for a few seconds (like ‘soft touch closures’) giving you time to push the handle out and then grab the front part in one movement (and the same hand)
