All electric cars will need to emit a sound at up to 19 mph to protect pedestrians starting in 2019

U.S. regulators took an outrageous amount of time to decide on this fairly simple issue, but now it’s finally here. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced today that electric and hybrid cars will need to emit a sound at up to 19 mph to protect pedestrians.

The sound emitting device will need to be in all new electric and hybrid cars manufactured starting in September 2019. more…

I wouldn't mind a knight rider type soft whine externally with cabin kept dead quiet. Maybe just amplify the electric motor noise a bit , that should do.

One thing for sure, our friends @ T≡SLA are going to produce a heck of lot of (very) quiet... and beautiful cars within the next two years... :)

There are a LOT of ICE vehicles that are virtually silent at very low speeds. They should have that for ALL vehicles, then. These little things eventually add up to be big things and slows EV adoption. I don't like it.

At which speed? 3 mph? :p Sorry, I guess I must have been driving Diesel engines for too long... :)
But you are right, of course!! If quiet is dangerous, there should be an objective less than X db criteria to determine which vehicle (BEV and ICE) should be equipped with the special sound 'up to 19 mph' (which I take it was derived - after rounding - from 30 km/h... :))
    Have a nice evening!

Exactly. And bicycles are too quiet too. But nobody's clamoring for bikes to start emitting noise. Noise pollution is a big problem that many people don't think about simply because they've become used to having all of that noise. The last thing we should do is add more noise to cities.
GOOD GOD, DON"T GIVE THEM ANY IDEAS.

Electrek posted a schematic from Tesla showing the Model S already appears to have what are probably external speakers (outside the cabin at least) embedded in the Model S. If they do it's just a matter of time for them to release a software update to enable the speakers and thus the sound.

I certainly hope, at least at first, the ability to turn off the external sound if we so chose. The biggest problem here is not that the cars are silent but that pedestrians are completely distracted by their phones and not paying any attention to their surroundings. Maybe Apple and the others need to build car-sensing abilities in the phones to alert pedestrians... :)

Trev, absolutely agree. In fact I am just stopped in the hotel parking garage as I am writing this response on my iPhone... :)
