Electric car sales crash is predicted by Edmunds due to the end of the federal tax credit

Edmunds, the auto research firm, came up with a grim report titled “Elimination of federal tax credits likely to kill U.S. EV market”. They title says it all. They predict that electric vehicle sales in the US will crash when the main automakers making electric vehicles will run out of the federal credits.

They are mainly coming to this conclusion based on a case study of what happened to electric vehicle sales in Georgia after they ended their own state program for electric vehicles. At least, they are acknowledging that upcoming vehicles, like the Tesla Model 3, could still bring EVs to a wider audience without the tax credit. more…

The market is going to crash for all of the electric cars that are simply economy cars with an electric powertrain and a high price (Leaf, Bolt, i3, etc.). The federal rebate brings the price of those down 15-20%, to where they're still not price-competitive with equivalent combustion vehicles, but at least they're closer. Sales of those cars are going to be decimated.

Tesla, however, is pricing the Model 3 to be competitive with equivalent combustion vehicles even without the federal incentive. I predict that electric car sales are going to crash for every automaker except for Tesla. In fact, I think Tesla sales will continue to accelerate.

Yeah sure it'll hurt the econobox cars as they won't be 20-25k here in Canada after rebates but I think anything that looks like an attractive car with more performance then ICE competitors will be fine.

The Drive has a nice retort to the Edmunds article:

Why Is There So Much Tesla Hate? Ask Edmunds

The only model that appeared to actually crash based on this poor excuse for a study was the Nissan LEAF. A model that already had a steep sales decline nationally of over 50%. This decline happened well before the Georgia subsidy was removed (special thanks to goodcarbadcar.net). The LEAF was also scheduled to be replaced with a brand new model later that year. Model changeovers usually result in temporary production and sales declines, but Edmunds chose to completely ignore that as well.

So the data doesn't support the conclusion, Why did Edmunds publish it?

Read the article to find out why Edmunds would do such a thing!
    The answer will shock you!
