Ford says electric vehicles will overtake gas in 15 years, announces all-electric 300-mile SUV, plug-in hybrid F-150, Mustang, more

Ford is making a big announcement in electrification today. CEO Mark Field confirmed several new models will receive electric drivetrain options, including its flagship F-150 pickup truck that will double as an on-site generator. In 2015, Ford announced a $4.5 billion investment in electric vehicles in order to introduce 13 new models.

Today, it confirmed 7 of those 13 new models and the list will surprise a few: a new all-electric SUV with “at least” 300 miles of range, a hybrid F-150 and a hybrid Mustang, a Transit Custom plug-in hybrid and 2 new electric police vehicles. more…

just that they are considering a hybrid F150 is positive. I've talked to a few family/friends/work associates who only drive trucks about fully electric trucks coming and they have all scoffed at the idea that it wouldn't be practical or provide the power/range they have with a current truck (with two gas tanks). A hybrid introduced in the F-series could convince a lot of people electric is possible and have them not feel like they are totally at risk of stepping off a cliff with an EV ;).
One of the guys I've had this conversation with is a construction superintendent on a project I'm working on. He lives in central WA and drives home each weekend and back to the job site in Portland each monday morning. Under normal conditions it's a 4 hour drive. However, over the last month the main freeway (I-84 on the oregon side) has been closed on/off for ice or whiteout snow conditions so he's taken the smaller highway (SR-14 on the washington side) that stays open, but still has the same conditions, plus twists and turns and is closer to 12-14 hours. At least with the weather and road conditions we've had lately, an EV is a hard sell with his drive.

A double stack of Model S packs, and two of the large motors would be a beast that would put their gas trucks to shame. But Elon isn't going to do anything wimpy like that. Expect a truck which exceeds current offerings in ALL categories.

          Thank you kindly.
