Honda’s all-electric Clarity EV will have 80-mile of range and start at ‘about $35,000’

In a new article based on comments made by Steve Center, vice president of environmental business development at American Honda Motor, Automotive News reports that Honda’s EV version of their Clarity vehicle platform will focus more on size and price than long range. They expect that Honda will release the car with about an ~80 mile range and an expected pricetag in the area of $35,000.

While Honda would like to have released with a larger battery, the size constraints of the Clarity platform and price constraints of Honda’s brand identity led them to decide on a smaller battery than many other future EVs which have recently been announced by other automakers.

Honda’s previous EV efforts have been the “EV Plus” of the late ’90s and the Fit EV. Both were very limited production, and the Fit EV is only available in California and only via lease. The Clarity EV will be their first serious, larger production BEV effort which can be purchased by consumers instead of only leased.

Wow, Honda really beat that thing with an ugly stick and I thought only Toyota was capable of such disdain for decent design.

Fenders that dip down over the rear wheels??? Really Honda??

Wow 80 miles for $35,000 in an ugly car! The lineup to not make a reservation will stretch for miles. Just make a deal with Tesla to build your batteries and be done with it,

Yep... I think this gets Honda right on top of the Ugly Design Award... (ok, with all due respect, excluding some Chinese BEV producers).... ;)
Fortunately they've got the new NSX yet other than that they've really fallen quite low!
Toyota is actually slowly getting better (special mention to some of the recent Lexus).

Honda and Toyota were on the CNG bandwagon.
They are very late to the electric vehicle party.
At least now we see some signs that they're considering making one.

I don't know what is going on with the Japanese companies and their reticence in making decent looking EVs:

Honda's front-end design language seems to be "Transformers"
Toyota is going crazy with the whole "chiseled cheeks" thing.
Lexus is still apeshit with the whole "Predator" thing

At least Nissan is being a bit more subdued in the design department

Maybe we're just too close to Tesla's "clean, smooth and flowing" design language ??

Tesla's design language is both sporty and conservative (other than the lack of grille). I think it was a good choice to not go with a polarizing look - it appeals to a wider audience.

I didn't much care for Cadillac's "Art & Science" design language at first, but now it seems attractive and still pretty unique. It grew on me.

Lexus' "predator" look is growing on me. Definitely not conservative.

Toyota's "big fat nose" design language of the last several years just looks awful. I'm surprised they still sell a lot of cars when they look like that. I'm glad they finally seem to be getting away from it.

Honda has a pretty conservative design language. They mostly look fine. This seems a bit out-of-character. But it does harken back to the original Honda Insight.

@garsh, totally with you on all your views above (incl. on specific designs which grow on you...) with one caveat... relative to Honda... For the most part in recent years, their design has worsened from conservative to plain dull, with some exceptions (generally horrors like the Insight and now this Clarity... and one real beauty, the NSX). Their Acura designs have remained more tolerable although not emotions stirrers (actually the NSX is an Acura, no? So an exception here actually...) ;)

What possible reason could Honda have for the love handles?

Those rear-wheel skirts are usually added to improve aerodynamics. But the public never seems to like the style.

Wow, another one for the ages... Either something got lost in translation... ;) or someone has smoking something...
    Here is the gem:
'Honda has an ambitious but reasonable plan to electrify its vehicles in Europe. Called “Electric Vision,” the plan was announced at the Geneva Motor Show today by Honda Motor Europe President and COO, Katsushi Inoue, who said that two-thirds of the company’s sales by 2025 to have “electrified powertrains.” That means hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery electric or fuel cell vehicles.
    (...)'

[Note: bold from me for emphasis... ;)]

With hybrids, ugly and/or (ugliest) fuel cell??? It is of the highest Clarity I am not tracking...

They should have called it the Presbyopia. Honda should schedule laser surgery ASAP.

I love the color in that first picture. I care more about aerodynamics than subjective assessments of beauty (though to be fair, they are generally the same in my eye). BUT, 80 miles range for $35,000? Do they think this is 2010?

    Thank you kindly.
