Survey finds average American willing to pay ~$3-$5k premium for automated vehicles

A new article in the May edition of Transportation Research took up the question of how much, if anything, consumers would pay for autonomous driving capabilities in their vehicles. The survey of 1,260 American households concluded that the average household would be willing to pay $3,500 for partial automation, or $4,900 for full automation.

There was a lot of variance in the data however, as several households said they would pay upwards of $10,000 for full automation, and others said they would not be interested in paying a premium at all for this technology. The research also concludes that because of this large variance in consumer price preferences, there will be plenty of room for vehicle models with varying levels of automation at various price points.

I asked people at work(mostly engineers) this question a few weeks ago. They definitely leaned towards not paying much or nothing. I'm glad to see the results they got in the survey though. People are bad drivers.

In time this kind of tech will just be included in the price of car. Like seatbelts, airbags, antilock brakes, traction control etc...

I see a point in the future where it will be illegal to drive manually on major highways.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. If they can get to level 5 in 2-3 years then they will quickly start to roll out automated taxi services which will be a lot cheaper than owning a car. Then presumably people would fairly quickly stop buying new cars and it would be just a matter of time before they made driving illegal. But if they don't get to level 5 soon then I think it will be more like what Trev is saying where they just keep mandating more and more automation short of level 5 as safety features.

Had to to think twice about this one, then my right thumb struck! :) Frankly, @Badback , because you were astute enough not to specify when... ;)
I see a point in the future when millions will live on Mars... :)
