Tesla adds new “Glass Roof” Model S option; discontinues P90D

Just a few days after confirmation of the “Tesla Glass” tech group within the company, Tesla has quietly changed the Model S design studio, adding an all-glass roof option for the Model S. The option is available for the same price as the sunroof previously was, $1,500, and the panoramic sunroof option is now $2,000.

The new option notes that it is “Tesla Recommended for an open, expansive cabin feel.” The option removes the crossbar over the car’s B-pillar, and should make the Model S interior feel even more airy than with the panoramic sunroof.

The change to the design studio also removes the P90D option for the Model S. In addition, the “ludicrous” upgrade seems to no longer be an individual option – if you order a “P” model car, ludicrous speed is included.

This leaves a rather significant gulf in pricing between the 90D and P100D models, at $45,000 difference in price between the two trim levels for the Model S and a $40,000 difference for the Model X, making a non-performance “100D” model seem like an inevitable way to fill that gap.

Ok, that was pretty good. Well played, Jameson.

I can't wait for owners of this option to report on it. I imagine this will be similar to the glass-roof option to be offered on the Model 3. I would assume that it would be somewhat heavily tinted, but we'll find out.

I hope some sort of shade is offered. I can imagine there will be times when you just don't want the sun to be beating down on your head.

This would be the option I'd chose for a Model S. I love the big sky look of a pano roof but never option the Moon roof. It's perfect.

As for a shade I'm sure Tesla will offer one, if not the guys at Evannex will. I already put in a word to them :)

Really curious to see some impressions of the glass. I love the idea. Problem is I had laser eye surgery 5 years ago. It fixed my vision but left me overly light sensitive. I'm hoping it gives the sense of an open cabin and seeing the sky would be lovely but it'd need to be quite tinted to not harm my driving ability.

@Brian_North I had Lasik 9 years ago and I'm kind of in the same boat with light sensitivity but Tesla's glass roofs are UV coated and some a bit of polarization so it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Sunglasses while driving are a must if you ask me.

On a side note, not sure if your LES fixed distance or close up vision but mine was to fix long-distance but I find myself needing reading glasses now as my close up vision has deteriorated as I've aged over the last 9-10 years. It's really noticeable now.

Yeah I never leave the house without sunglasses. My biggest problem is usually night driving, the high powered halogen lamps tend to blind me. I have a pair of glasses that increases my vision slightly beyond 20/20 and they really help with night driving. I imagine the glass will cut the sun down enough it won't be an issue.

My vision was really poor in both. The entire world looked blurry. I was approaching a -6 lens in the one eye. Now I'm a pretty solid 20/22.5 but yeah I'm sure I'll need reading glasses as I creep into my 30s next year.

This thread helps me better understand the difference between the all glass and panoramic roof optional alternative to the 'metal roof' (presumably standard) top for our beloved Model ≡...
So let me see if I get this right...
    - base would be metal roof yet presumably a relatively small surface of metal seen the large windshield and yuuuuge rear window...
    - first upgrade in price would be 'all glass' yet that would be fixed glass, i.e. no possibility to open or tilt... Price? Shall we see $1000, since it is $1500 on the larger MS..?
    - then, the most expensive choice would be panoramic roof, meaning essentially the same as all glass in overall effect yet with ability to open...

Did I get all this right? If yes, I think I confirm my bias for all glass! Have enjoyed having sunroofs on my recent cars because of the extra light it gives you inside the car.. yet in the end I rarely open the roof 'cause what's the point of a nicely sound insulated car and then get all this wind noise?! :p

I have had to correct for both distance and since my mid 40s for reading. This summer had a retinal detachment which was repaired by laser. That eye is much more sensitive and sunglasses are mandatory. While I live the look of this I am going to have to be totally sure I can cope with the light before buying it. Interesting how the techo from elon's businesses is blending together and supporting each venture.

This'll probably end up as its own thread but Elon is in a tweety mood and responded to someone that there will probably be an option for a solar cell in the M3 glass or as a retractable option (think softtop convertables). Totally makes sense, even if it's not a large amount of power being outside all day everyday adds up quick. I'd totally take it as an option.

Disappointing that the all glass roof is so expensive. Seems like the Model 3 will be at least $500 upgrade.

Elon is going to disappoint anyone who can buys solar panels on the roof and can do the math. 2kWh per day just isn't going to be noticeable.

    Thank you kindly.

Wow... Topher, I'd consider the all glass a steel if only about $500. Typical sunroofs cost over $1000 on the class of cars Model ≡ aims to compete with (if ever an ICE could be deemed to be a reasonable alternative to Model ≡!!) :)

I am sure the sunroof option on the Model 3 will be even more expensive, ($1500?).

    Thank you kindly.

remember also that the "roof" section on the Model ☰ is much smaller SF than the Model S, so using the S upgrade prices for the solid roof to glass may not be comparable. the pano maybe similar with the most of it's cost likely in the mechanics of it.

@MelindaV , of course that makes sense. Hence the price of the all glass for Model ≡ should indeed then likely to be somewhere between $500-700 on the low end up to, say $1000, depending on their choice for a more cost pricing approach (also pro rated to respective base prices for Model ≡ and MS) or rather for value pricing... Of course, in this case as the guy buying the car, I'd rather hope for the former, yet I'm afraid my (many) years in Marketing would lead me more to expect the latter... :)
