Tesla Autopilot’s new radar technology predicts an accident caught on dashcam a second later

Just a few weeks ago, we publish a report about how Tesla’s new radar technology for the Autopilot is already proving useful in some potentially dangerous situations. We now have a new piece of evidence that is so spectacularly clear that it’s worth updating that report.

The video of an accident on the German Autobahn caught on the dashcam of a Tesla Model S shows the Autopilot’s forward collision warning predicting an accident before it could be detected by the driver. more…

Amazing. This is what saves lives.

Finally some good news about autopilot instead of the usual media negativity

Wow. I watched it at least ten times. It looks like the red hatch was trying to changes lanes and was checking his blind spot instead of braking. There was not enough time to safely complete the lane change manouever and hence he hit the car in front .

The scary part here is the SUV roll over from such a small car impact.

I am sold on the autopilot system is all I have to say.

    Awesome.

WARNING: if you click on the "direct from the webcam" video (the second one), you'll get one of those aweful popup window ads that are difficult to close. There's probably malware involved too, so be careful.

This accident really is on a Netherlands highway, not a German Autobahn.

What happens here is that the cars on the left lane are too close together, while there are fewer cars on the righthand lane. As is often the case on our highways. Then when someone in front brakes, the cars in the left lane often need to brake hard. The driver of the red compact was expecting it and tried to go into the right lane. But when she/he was doing that (maybe looking over her/his right shoulder) the brakes were slammed on in the left lane and the red car crashed against the right hand corner of the medium sized SUV. Which went into a spin, crashed into the side rail and as a result of that started to roll. The red compact made a free spin of a full circle.

On the subject of forward warning Autopilot. This is indeed an affirmation of the usefulness of the system. I want it even more now!
