More of the same with somewhat complementary input by Teslarati... (was trying to combine this with another announcement from Reuters in a new thread under solar & this time lost to the RSSFeed bot! ;))

This partnership between Panasonic and Tesla is kind of insane. The two companies are so closely tied together at this point. Tesla is putting a lot of faith in Panasonic - not that they have much choice. But it seems to go well beyond that. I'm curious to know what kind of protections exist in these agreements to prevent Panasonic from selling these same technologies to Tesla's competitors. Maybe none?

Hard to tell, @garsh... I don't imagine these terms are or will be made public... Until such point as we hear otherwise, I'll continue to be optimistic...
Also don't forget that, in a true partnership, both parties are betting on the other. If Panasonic, in addition to agreements already in place that support the Nevada Gigafactory, are also investing 1/4 of a billion bucks into Buffalo, that means they are also betting on the entire T≡SLA vision successfully coming through, including unlocking the potential of solar roofs & tiles + Powerwalls and BEVs!
The next couple of years are truly going to be fascinating!
    Have a great day!

Agreed, Panasonic stands to lose a lot if Tesla fails. But they would survive, and presumably would still have the technology to sell to others.

But Tesla wouldn't just lose a lot if Panasonic were to "back-stab" them. They would quickly cease to exist.

But all of the interviews I've seen where a Panasonic executive (not sure who) discusses the partnership with Tesla, they refer to it as "unprecedented", and that both companies are really working together as a single entity on these technologies. It really does seem to be amazing.

I think that Japanese cultural norms come into play in the relationship in a way that precludes duplicity.
