Tesla hires head of Delphi’s Advanced Radar Systems group to improve on its own radar technology

Tesla has been developing an important expertise in radar technology over the last year. Earlier this year, Tesla worked with its radar supplier, Bosch, to get upgraded drivers and access to raw input from the radar antenna on its Model S and X vehicles in order to build its own processing of the input.

The effort culminated in the release of Tesla’s version 8.0 software update in September that enabled improvements to Tesla’s Autopilot features. The automaker is still looking to improve on its new system and recently hire a new engineering lead from a leading competitor in autonomous driving systems. more…

More evidence as to the commitment that Tesla is making towards establishing and maintaining its lead in the industry regarding autonomous driving.

Really seems to be turning into a LIDAR vs. RADAR scenario. The deep learning aspects of the equation seem to be happening universally. The NVIDEA presentation is using LIDAR but it seems they also are developing systems for Tesla using their suite of RADAR based sensors.

Probably all comes down to cost. Google or Tesla...seems pretty clear who will be first out. I guess the question remains who will prove safer most widely accepted, both from the general public as well as the legislative bodies overseeing the mandates and laws as they pertain to autonomous driving.

I think Tesla wins this battle. The sensor suite is much cheaper (lidar is expensive). I believe radar performs better in rain and snow than lidar. And I think the sheer redundancy that Tesla provides with all the cameras is going to be key.

Then there's the whole issue that Google isn't going to make a car, hasn't announced any partners for its technology, and that every automaker seems to be developing their own systems.

Yeah, better in rain & snow sounds like the right plan for anybody who wants to use this besides Southern CA... :)
So, why have Google been doing all this work if it's not to be used commercially? I know that this is what it seems like, yet it feels a bit out of character for Google, no? What do you think, @garsh ?
On a side note, thought I would mention that my wifey (from Akron, OH...) is a clear Steelers' fan!! :)

I don't know anything, but my guesses would be:
    1. To push the technology forward. They were one of the first companies to put lots of resources into development. They realized that self-driving vehicles would be a great thing for humanity. From this work, they can discover things like "what kind of mapping information would really help when developing autonomous cars".
    2. They were probably thinking about licensing the technology eventually. I mean, if you're developing the technology, but not building a car to go with it, then I think that's about the only other option.

That's good. For Akron residents, it's either the Steelers or the Browns, and to be a Browns fan is to be perenially disappointed.

Good points. Probably a combination of the two... with the 2nd one the scale! You're the man! :)

We had a Delphi facility here near VW Autoeuropa factory that closed couple of years ago.
Delphi was in Portugal for a lot of years as a resourcer for VW cars, EOS, Sharan (FORD Galaxy)

I see Elon like to go hunting on the VW talent pond...

That is the understatement of the year!! :p Trust that even in Cleveland it's hard for them to stand behind the local franchise... OK, well at least they've got LeBron and the Cavs to console them!! :)

    Ha!

Try being an Atlanta sports fan these days. It's just one disappointing season after the next! ;)
