Tesla hires HoloLens designer, second Microsoft employee from the augmented reality program

Adding to the rumors that Tesla might be working on adding augmented reality features to its vehicles, Tesla this month hired one of the top industrial designers of the HoloLens, Microsoft’s augmented reality headset.

It’s Tesla’s second hire from Microsoft’s HoloLens program after having hired one of the computer vision scientists from the program last year. more…

Funny that I do a video on AR HUD and Tesla hires yet another guy for their team and Electrek does an article a day later.

Tesla had better do this otherwise there's going to be hell to pay :)

Ok Here is the deal, I agree that they probably going that way...but the real question is: Is the model 3 being release at the end of 2k17 will have these features right out of the gate?...they might be included in the model S and X but what if they didn't make it in the design to be released for 2k17? They may include them in the next iteration of the model 3...
What I'm worried about was when Elon was pushing for pencil down design update 6 weeks prior to the model 3 reveal and he said anything else will go on another iteration of the car...
I'm hoping even if that's the case then it would use the same hardware and it would be an additional option available through OTA updates, so it won't matter too much if we got a 2018k Model 3 or a 2020 Model 3...

I think this has been the plan from the beginning. With the big push in the states against distracted driving I don't think they would want everybody constantly looking to the right to check speed and other system statuses. The HUD is the only way to go. Great video TrevP!

At the end of the day, we will only know for sure at the next reveal, @Blackout ... either T≡SLA designers cave to the forces of evil and revert to a more traditional dashboard with a screen behind a plain steering wheel... - yet that would hardly be spaceship-like, would it?! - or, they stay closer to what we've seen, yet they augment reality with a beautiful HUD system... and then... beam me up, Scotty!!

In addition, if most of it is software... think of the many months (9, more?) before the cars stalling rolling out of the assembly line in a big way...! I don't think they can afford to put the first reservation holders (in the West Coast) at a major disadvantage on this when the goal is to make Model ≡ radical from the get go!
HUD, HUD, we all want HUD!! :)

I have thought from the very beginning that Tesla was MUCH further along than they appeared with the Model 3. I think this was the intent from the beginning and much, if not all, of what was needed was already in place. I think Trevor is dead on with all of this.

Agree, and I think this pix (or the various others out there showing the dash) speak directly to the Model ☰ getting something new/innovative - like an all new HUD setup

It occurs that a Drive CX will be able to drive the HUD/AR, the existing screen, and maybe even some other screen.

These guys think AR is coming, too: http://bgr.com/2016/11/24/tesla-model-3-interior-ar-hololens/

"That kind of setup has been trialed by other companies in the past, and it shows real promise for giving drivers x-ray vision to see through their own car and eliminate blind spots."

Imagine, an AR headset could erase your car completely and you would be gliding over the road!

Nobody wants to drive a car and have to wear a headset or turn into a Glasshole. Not gonna happen.

I mentioned in my video that Tesla may not offer this right away, especially in the Model 3 for 2 reasons:

                  1. Design phase is locked and can't change due to the timeline to get production going.
                  2. Model S and X are the technology leaders and have higher margins to absorb the R&D costs of doing this first.

The only way it could make its way into the Model 3 right from the start if is Tesla has their costs savings in check and pass it along for this system and also if their Model 3 interior/systems design was further along than anyone thinks. The interior at the reveal event could have a simple placeholder for the real one going into production. Tesla has a history of showing interiors on prototypes that don't make it to production.

I think that should only be allowed with level 5 autonomous driving. If there is a malfunction in the headset display (goes opaque or a weird, vision restricting color), you may lose driving focus while trying to remove it.

Ok, two responses to these two statements. I would be interested in your take Trevor.

                    1. I have always felt that having learned from their Model X rollout Tesla was WAY further ahead of the design phase on the Model 3 than they were letting on. Could this have been in the works from the start with most if not all of the logistics already in place? Judging from his "spaceship" comments at the first reveal it would seem Elon already knew what it was going to be.

                    2. If it is indeed in place already it would seem very easy to have the spring Model 3 reveal with production to start in the next quarter and still release the technology immediately in the Model S and X.

                    Thoughts?

                    Dan

I don't think Tesla showed us a blank dash only to replace it later with a regular speedometer.

I didn't consider reason 2 which is a valid point, but for me reason 1 is definitely the biggest road block for the HUD. Also the important hiring phase for the HUD happened after the reveal. Worst case if they add it on the Model 3 they'll have it as a separate option which would be an expensive one to compensate for the R&D cost...The fact that they will produce and sell more M3 means they can charge less for it on the Model 3 vs the Model S and X
