    Tesla Model 3 will feature new type of glass developed in-house, Elon Musk confirms ‘Tesla Glass’ tech group

    [IMG]

    Two months ago, we reported in exclusivity about a new program at Tesla called ‘Tesla Glass’. We admitted at the time that we didn’t know much about the program other than its director and the high level of secrecy surrounding it.

    But now CEO Elon Musk confirmed that it’s a new “glass technology group” at the automaker and that the new glass technology will be featured in the upcoming Tesla Model 3. more…

    Just making a car is not good enough for Tesla. I love how they're innovating in all sorts of ways.

    Just goes to show how much better a Model 3 will be @ $35K than any other car in the same price range.

      Intrigued by the Tesla glass.

      Could it be: (it already blocks UV)
      - Variable tint glass for the roof panel.
      - High index glass to make a HUD perform better. Reflects the projected image better.
      - Higher thermal insulation value.

        I'd vote for 1, 3 and 2 in priority order... :)

        As I said in TMC, I think Tesla glass will be a glass specifically targeted at Model 3 and Tesla vehicles. Aim could be to improve against normal toughened automotive glass in the following areas:

        * Improved thermal and noise Insulation
        * Reduced weight
        * Higher strength
        * Allow HUD
        * All of the above while reducing cost for base car
        * Additional software-enabled features for those who pay for options

          I have not heard a single story about the Tesla glass technology group since it was first talked about back in November. Has anyone heard anything about this? Has anyone done any independent sleuthing for evidence of an expanded glass program? (e.g. amounts of raw silicon Tesla has been purchasing?)

          I'm amazed at how tight they've been able to keep a lid on this stuff!
