I am really disappointed by this. That is the one feature I was planning find the money somehow to get.
It looks like my options are to accept RWD or delay and miss the full tax rebate and possibly just get half.

think of the amount of time you plan to own the car, then divide that ½ credit by that time and figure out if it's worth waiting to get what you want. Say you plan to keep the car for 6 years. that would be $1.72/day. Is it worth saving that amount to compromise on what you want?
in reality, that ½ credit would otherwise mostly pay for the dual option.....

With one kid in college and two more soon, there is only so much money in the well. Not to mention that the current ride will be at 200,000 mi by then.

The plan was to order dual motors and have the full tax credit offset the cost. Now we have to settle between AWD and maybe half the credit or RWD (not what I intended to get) and the full credit.

the concept of the dual motor being delayed is not just coming up. It's been speculated for some time the first cars produced would be rwd

It's sure news to me. Well it's not like complaining here will do anything. Will think about my options and purchase accordingly.

What configuration were you thinking about?

I've been keeping my expectations on options on the pessimistic side.... BUT if everything on the S/X is an option, I would choose 55D, Metallic or Multicoat paint, leather, SAS, carbon fiber, PUP and EAP.
I don't really 'need' dual or a larger battery... I may shift to a larger battery and drop the dual now that it's timeline has been confirmed. I'm sure I'll change my mind another dozen times before the configurer opens....

        Sounds fair.

I was thinking the blue metallic with the white interior and carbon fiber decor. dual motor (pending revision after today's news), High amperage charger, larger battery and the sub zero weather package. Up in the air is Full self driving, sound package, and PUP.

I don't think the high amp charger will be an option (that's one of the options my pessimistic side deleted)

I don't think you'll have to worry about getting dual motors. We are both on the East coast, so we won't be getting vehicles until 9 months from the beginning of production. By then duals will be available and the full tax refund will be available.

We need a second car sooner than later plus we'll be in Cali soon so it's tempting to go RWD if getting it in 2017 seems like a sure thing. My hope is that with VERY high position in the cue, being in California, and all the dual motor hold outs, that might be possible.

One side benefit of waiting on the AWD versions is it will give them some time to do some winter testing. I imagine they haven't done any on model 3's and we're past the worst of it for this year. I haven't heard many bad things about Tesla surviving winter but with a brand new design...?

My prediction is things will get delayed a couple months this year and they will not hit the 200,000 in 2017 which would push the full US rebate to mid 2018 which should at least cover the early reservation holders who want(need) AWD and more options.

The matte alpha hasn't been seen since it showed up in a tesla service garage early last summer (the silver hardly more than that). In all likelihood, both of those were built with the new battery config and one or the other was shipped off to some remote cold place this last winter. Tesla is new at this, but they likely have learned something about scheduling and how much time they have between the reveal and the end of 2017.
Absolutely no proof, besides faith they know what they are doing by now. (eh... sorta).
