Tesla Model Y unofficial render ahead of launch

The Tesla Model Y is expected to be a compact SUV built on the same platform as the Model 3. The automaker hasn’t officially commented on when it plans to unveil the vehicle, but we have to assume that it will be relatively soon based on comments made by CEO Elon Musk.

In the meantime, we get another visual help to envision the vehicle with this new unofficial render. more…

That 3rd party rendering does look pretty nice. Although I don't think the Model Y would ever debut with Falcon Wing Doors.

Yeah I remember that. But he also later stated that the Falcon Wing Doors were too complicated and that it added too much complexity, or something along those lines.

I would speculate that the Model Y would be a lot like the Model 3 in the sense that it will be produced using a simplified manufacturing strategy.

I would love it it have the falcon wing doors. I know I'm of the minority but.... id pay $5g more if I could have them.

I know they aren't perfect but it just makes the vehicle. Other wise it's just a pumped up 3.

He did (reference). In particular, he said:
“It’s a software problem. How do you interpret all the information from the sensors? What should you remember? What shouldn’t you remember? How should you open the door in different circumstances, if you’re in a low ceiling or a narrow situation? If the sensor is giving erroneous feedback, when is the right time to ignore the sensor? Digging ourselves out of the hole has been quite, quite hard.”
I'm thinking that they'll have the Falcon Wing Door software pretty well sorted-out by the time a Model Y is being produced.

It's time like this that I get a little concerned about the status of autopilot 2.0.

They had a nightmare with the doors, imagine a full autopilot hardware suite of sensors and life or death desicions to make.

Let's hope they didn't have to start from
                scratch after booting Mobileye.

I would prefer a Model Y that does not cost any more than the equivalent Model 3.

Oh don't get me wrong, I would love it if the Model Y had the Falcon Wing Doors.

I just believe that it will be developed at a lower price point and regular doors are likely in its future. Again, due to cost reasons and to not cannibalize sales of the X.

                    But here's to hoping!

I would prefer a Model Y that doesn't look like it took queues from Subaru ;)

actually I have zero interest in a CUV/SUV style vehicle, but subaru was what immediately jumped out at me when I saw the contrasting fenders, bumpers and lower edges.

I got more of a Porsche Macan type style..... Either way, I really liked the rendering.

My interest in a CUV comes from two directions. 1. My OTHER (mostly human female companion) has 30 cats. Trips to the vet test the capacity of any vehicle. 2. CUVs are easier to get into. As you may have deduced from the handle, I can't enter a car like most people. I have to back in by first sitting on the edge of the seat and then pivoting. A high door sill is a must, and a higher seat is helpful. Our current VW Tiguan meats these requirements. So, a similarly sized Model Y would be right for me. If the Y is available when the time comes, I may jump to that if everything else meets my liking.

You know it wouldn't surprise me if Tesla dropped the whole idea of doing falcon wing doors on a Model 3 CUV. Just too complicated and expensive.

I like SUVs in general but now I'm looking forward to getting back into a sedan. You see, I like washing my cars on Saturdays but climbing up to wash the roof and all that extra surface area is tiresome now. I just want to wash and drive this baby!

As a person whose significant other is a serious animal person, I feel your pain. At various times we have had several cats, 2 dozen birds and currently 5 dogs, the 2 largest at 100 and 90 lbs. She has always had mini-vans or SUVs. When her current vehicle, a Chevy Traverse, which I have to admit is an excellent vehicle, is ready to be replaced I will be pushing for the Model Y.

If the Model 3 had been a CUV or hatchback I would have been happy with that, as I have always preferred them.

Nothing beats an SUV for visibility and ease of driving in the winter. I love that about my Subaru Forester, in addition to the all wheel drive. I think that they will have a variant for the Model Y after they ramp up production. Initially they will start out with conventional doors to keep the price point inline with Model 3, although, I think the model Y will cost more than the 3 in any case.

The base price may be higher, but I think that will be if there are some add-ons for the Model 3 that come standard on the Model Y, like AWD or enhanced suspension.

Badback we topped out at 6 cats but I understand. I have always looked for something smaller with pickup, I have a manual shift for that reason. My wife loves her giant Hyundai Veracruz, to me it feels like climbing into a tank. I am hoping after I get my 3 that I can talk her into Y.
