Tesla officially announces end of free Supercharging, new ‘Supercharging credit program’ starts in 2017

Tesla officially announced the end of free Supercharging today and confirmed the previously rumored ‘Supercharging credit program’, which will start in 2017. The automaker presents this change in the fast-charging network’s economic structure as a way “to reinvest in the network, accelerate its growth and bring all owners, current and future, the best Supercharging experience.” more…

Wow this is quite a change!! The 400KwH is very generous to say the least for owners, and it resets annually? Many people, at least here in the Northeast, charge at home and/or at work for the great majority of charging. For many I would think we wouldn't even need to go over the 400KwH amount of charging in a year. Maybe for the Model 3 at least that generous amount will be cut down in order to make more $ for the company. I know they stated it won't be a $ maker, but just a little bit by each of the 400,000 cars would go a long way towards paying for the gigafactory, Model Y, Minibus, ect.....besides ALL the other competitors don't have this charging infrastructure !!

The 400KWH for free seems pretty generous to me. That'd be like $70 ish dollars in power at Ontario electricity rates. What ICE company gives you a gas voucher for $70 every year? :p

Hopefully the yearly allowance will not be halved for Model ≡.... By the way, the announcement says 'All T≡SLAs...'
That would indeed be great!! :)

I did some quick calcs based on my typical driving to show how the 400kWh/1,000 miles should be more than enough. And I am sure whatever overage fees they come up with, in the end it will still be significantly less than a prepaid $2,000 as most of us were expecting!

I think this may be best option they could have done. Treating all current and future vehicles in the same way.

current owners actually continue on with the SP access that they currently have. But all future (Order 1/17, delivery 4/17) owners will be treated the same

I am curious. Why would it be different for previous X model owner vs. future X model owners? What both pay is same amount.

because the current owners (and those thru the cutoff) bought their vehicle under the "SC free for life" understanding.
Tesla would not take that away from them just because they've implemented a new way of dealing with SC'ing going forward.

Read in the Washington Post tonight: ' It isn't clear how much the charging fees will be; Tesla said the prices will likely fluctuate based on regional demand for electricity. But they will be comparable to filling a tank with gas, the company said.'
Where did T≡SLA say that?? The announcement as I read it said 'less than' comparative cost filling a tank for gas, no?
And besides am I naive in thinking that, when they say that, they are most likely referring to gas prices in the US, which would make the fee for using SC incrementally, beyond the original 1,000 miles in Europe, significantly cheaper than what buys a full tank of gas... unless they charge more in EU for charging and make a profit, which they claim is not the intent, right?!

I expect the rate will be equivalent to the electric rate plus some. So if the kw rate is .10/kw, maybe the fee from tesla would be .20/kw. So topping off with 30km could be $6. (total speculation but expect likely still less than the 3rd party L3 charger rates)
will be interesting to see how they deal with electric rates ranging from $.05 to nearly $.50 though. will they pick a set rate per country? or per state/region within each country? I took the comment on the blog to be more that they would be adjusting the rate from time to time based on current electrical rates - so maybe an annual re-adjustment.

And again, how will we pay for it each time? Do you like my T≡SLA App idea? Paying with a credit card in this case feels so passé..!! :)

I think it will be like my preloaded Starbucks account. When it gets below a specified amount, it automatically (or should that be autonomously ?) reloads a specific amount from a credit card on file.

Any thoughts on the laws preventing resale of electricity?
