Tesla pushes boundaries of Michigan’s direct sales law and opens showroom in the state

Michigan is the home state of the Big Three automakers and the most populated state in the US that still doesn’t have a Tesla store or service center. For that, you can thank a law backed by GM and local dealerships that prohibit automakers from operating car dealers in the state.

Tesla has been trying to open a store and service center in Michigan for the better part of the last 3 years, but it wasn’t able to get around the law, which is why it sued the state earlier this year. While the case is in court, Tesla went ahead and opened a showroom in Troy yesterday – something that pushes the boundaries of Michigan’s direct sales law. more…

I'm hoping by the time model 3 is ready Michigan will have at least a few service centers. The prospect of having to tow my model 3 hundreds of miles due to a breakdown or accident is scary.

Imagine they will, @Mark Eldridge ... Right now, as I trust you know, there seems to be just the Detroit Service Centre - tel: (877)798-3752 - as per Teslarati... yet you would hope something up North (Saginaw?) and/or West (Grand Rapids?) could be added at some point... I must mention I have no data point at this stage hence this is pure speculation by what may make sense looking at the map...
Have the same hope for me for SW France as the closest Service Centre today 200 miles from where I'll be...
Remember though, you will not need to go there near as often normally as what we've historically been used to with ICE cars... :)

Your right, I checked Tesla's site and showed a service center coming soon in Detroit. About 2 hours from Battel Creek.

I think that service center in Detroit has been on the map for a year or so. The one in Nordstroms is currently open, but I couldn't get a hold of any representative there when calling the department store... Guess they don't have a direct line that the operator knew about.

I saw a Tesla model S on a flatbed the other day. Probably being serviced. I believe the Tesla Rangers will come to your home too. Also I remember the people in Cleveland will meet up half way distance for service needs for their Michigan customers.

I've seen a few around the Battle Creek-Kalamazoo area, I wonder how they go about the service issue. We have thousands of vehicle vs deer accidents every year, what would happen in that scenario? Telsa's roadside states it doesn't cover collisions if I remember correctly.
