Tesla Supercharger was sabotaged, affecting route between LA and Vegas ahead of busy weekend

Someone has sabotaged Tesla’s Barstow supercharger, just before the big holiday travel weekend. Whoever it was, they seem to have acted deliberately.

The supercharger seems to have been down since at least Saturday, per a post on Tesla Motors Club in the Barstow supercharger thread, but was working as of Thursday around noon per PlugShare checkins. Tesla is aware of the outage, but will likely not have the station up until the end of the month – after the big holiday travel weekend.

Tony Williams, longtime EV driver and owner of EV charging adapter provider Quick Charge Power, went and checked the damage. He has posted some pictures of the damage, which is quite extensive, and suggests that the job seems to be a deliberate act by knowledgeable people with access to “commercial grade” tools – certainly more than just a “smash ‘n grab”.

There is currently no solid information as to the motivation behind the sabotage. We don’t want to speculate as to that motivation, though we’re sure there will be plenty of speculation in the comments below.

    This is very disturbing.

    Nobody has security cameras around?

I don't yet drive an EV, but this makes me feel vulnerable.

Wow. It really blows my mind that somebody would do this. I'll assume that this is some sort of disgruntled individual - it's too petty to be corporate-backed sabotage.

Yet another reason for me to get the largest battery offered in my Model 3.

Indeed. That may actually be necessary if more of these crazy incidents occur...
In addition, I agree with the person who commented on Elektrek that when Model ≡ is out, the attendance at most SCs is likely to act as an additional deterrent ...
Yet it is a sorry development...
Let's stay strong... together... and let's not be discouraged by these defenders of a vanishing time...!

That's a convenient alibi for them. Disgruntled people seem not the sort to snip through high voltage cables. Or at least, not two.

    Thank you kindly.

But what was gained by this one act of sabotage? It's obviously sabotage, so nobody will be blaming Tesla themselves. There are other supercharging stations along the route, so while inconvenient, it doesn't prevent people from using their cars. It just seems like a huge risk for somebody to take, with no obvious gain.

Isn't that true regardless of the motivation. The trick is to get someone else to do the dirty work for you.

    Thank you kindly.
