VW kicked things off at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this week with a new all-electric and autonomous microbus concept: I.D. BUZZ.

The vehicle is a significant step up from the previous BUDD-e electric microbus concept and actually looks like a more modern version of the classic VW microbus. It is, of course, updated with all the latest tech and more importantly, an all-electric drivetrain using Volkswagen’s upcoming MEB platform for electric vehicles. more…

I think this thing could actually have some legs if it ever comes to fruition. Especially if they can release a camper version like the old VW bus had.

I think it's sad that such a spacious concept vehicle, to be launched in 2020, is basically already 3 years behind Tesla's battery range/size.

I am surprised with that as well. Although things can change by the time actual car is built. I would so love to have this in my garage.

Loose those ugly wheels and go retro with hub caps.

...but will it have that awesome shelf in the back over where the engine was? As the youngest of 5 kids that was my designated sleep space! Yes, this was long before mandatory seat belt laws.

    You had a shelf???

I remember travelling from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia in our pickup truck.
In the bed of the truck.
    In winter.

We did have a cap on the bed, but it was just me and my sister, bundled up in winter coats and a couple of sleeping bags.

    God, that sucked. :p

That's what I loved about the shelf. Nice and warm and the vibration from the engine...slept like a baby. Hell, I WAS a baby!
