New member from San Diego, CA. Reservation went in during the first 10 minutes of the hour pre-launch, so hopefully near the front of the line somewhere.

Currently in a Porsche Cayman lease that is up in November so the timeline is perfect. We also own a BMW i3 that I use for daily commute both for the fuel savings and the HOV access savings (I was paying more in I-15 Fasttrak fees than I was paying in fuel!)

I'm beyond excited for my Model 3!

I love and hate the I-15 expressway. Drops me right next to work, but never knowing if it is HOV only by the time I turn to get on in the afternoon has me wasting lots of time during u-turns.

Now I hope they extend the white decals for a few more years!

    Already done :) Dec 2017 - Feb 2018

I typically ignored the HOV ONLY signs. They basically just tack on an extra $8 to the Fasttrak fee for using lanes when they're set to HOV ONLY. Looking at the traffic on the primary lanes (the reason the Fasttrack lanes are HOV only) I'd just say screw it. Worth the $8 to not sit in that mess.

One of the guys higher up on my program does the same thing, just jumps in it every day and doesn't care if it says HOV only or not. I think I remember reading someplace that they will charge you the max $8 fee but they could also turn it over to CHP where they'll give you a HOV ticket. Not worth risking a $351+ ticket to me. I've already gotten stopped once because the CHP couldn't see my transponder. (I turned onto the ramp right in front of him He already had someone pulled over, but then glared at me, and then pointed to the side. I figured I better stop.)

What has made me upset with them in the past was I had 4 people in the car, but forgot to take down my transponder. They charged me anyway and told me there was nothing they could do about it.

If that happened I'd fight it for sure as the rules are very specific on their site.

    • Solo drivers should not enter the Express Lanes when “HOV ONLY” is displayed in the overhead signs. If you enter the lanes after the “HOV ONLY” message is displayed, you will be charged the maximum toll amount, currently $8, and assessed a fine equal to the maximum toll amount.

Still, not an issue anymore now that I commute with the i3. It's a god awful ugly looking car (though better than a Leaf) and only gets about 70mi range now, but It's only about 20 miles each way and I can charge at work for about $0.12/kwh.

woo hoo! Nice to see more San Diegans on here! If someone here gets theirs before me, I'd really love to check it out! I'm a day 1 reservation holder (stood in line the afternoon before the announcement). Current delivery estimate is Dec '17-Feb '18. I'm really hoping it turns out to be December! My current lease ends in December, and I really don't want to go back to driving my 15 year old junker.

I'm in San Diego as well, in Santee. I just finally decided to join the forums and made my intro post with some insight in where they are in production. Can someone enlighten me on how HOV and the fees for using it work in SD? I've seen the fees on the bilboards on the highway but haven't seen anywhere to pay or how they do it? I normally ride my motorcycle so I don't worry about the HOV things too much, but would like to know if I'm supposed to pay to use it on my motorcycle or car. I'm originally from the Bay Area, but haven't been in CA and living here for the last almost 8 years due to the military. I'm finally back in Cali thanks to the military again.

    Welcome!

From my understanding the HOV lanes down here on the 15 are HOV / TOLL lanes. The signage you see for the fees are for single occupancy vehicles with a fasttrak account (http://511sd.com/fastrak511sd/fastrakhome). The lanes are free for HOV vehicles (including your motorcycle). There are times you'll see the signs say HOV ONLY which means the fastrak people can't get in the lane (well they can.. but risk an HOV ticket).

For the Model 3 you'll have to get the CA HOV sticker, which should be white for the pure electric vehicles, to gain access during all HOV times and the normal HOV rules apply. No need to pay a fee etc if you've got the sticker and the CA government keeps the stickers valid. Right now I believe they are good until Jan 19 unless it gets extended again.

Welcome back to CA and thank you for your service!

    It's a plan!

Yes, Nov-Jan. I hope more "Nov" than "Jan".

Thank you for answering my questions about HOV. It's interesting how it's different from NorCal HOV rules. How do CHP know that you have a fasttrack if you are using HOV and not carpooling? Its funny I was stationed in Hawaii earlier and the traffic there was awful and my wife and I were talking about pretty much having the same setup there would be great.

Is there anything special I need to do to get the sticker or does it come when I register the car?

Glad to be back! Thank you!

I've gotten stopped getting on the HOV lane once because the cop didn't see my fastrak transponder. I showed him where it was and on my way I went.
The crappy part is if you have the transponder up all the time and then actually have people in your car the fastrak people will still charge you. Found that out the hard way and they wouldn't even reverse / credit my account because of it. So now I just keep it off the window unless I'm actually using it.

The sticker will be from the DMV. There is a form you'll need to fill out (https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/forms/reg/reg1000) and send it in with a check and then wait for the stickers to show up.

Ahh so make sure it's visible... That sucks about having people in the car and not getting credit, but I guess it makes sense with them not being able to know if you have passengers? I'll need to be sure to get the stickers, so I don't forget and get in trouble for using the HOV without people.
