While developing the Model 3, cutting costs is a top priority for Tesla. There are some known factors that will help Tesla to achieve this goal:
    - Battery technology and size
    - Overall smaller size compared to S and X
    - Steal body components instead of aluminum
    - Minimalistic interior with less parts, just one display
    - More sales
    - Simplified / optimised manufacturing process

In general, most car manufacturers save costs on smaller cars by using less quality materials, less noise isolation and less standard equipment. For example, compare a BMW 3 series with a BMW 5 series. The 3 does not have the comfort and quality materials of the 5.

What can we expect from Tesla with respect to Model 3? Will noise isolation be on par with Model S? Will the seats provide the same comfort and leather quality? Will general fit and finish be as good? Will standard equipment on the S be (expensive) options on the 3 (led lights, aluminum wheels, power seats, data connectivity, parking sensors, ...).

    What are your expectations?

My expectations with Model 3 will be same quality materials as Model S, just a bit less bells and whistles (auto present door handles etc..).

Tesla has their drive train (including batteries) costs down to the point where they can offer a significantly better car than the competition at the same price points. As long as they pay a bit more attention to the interior on Model 3 you can expect the same quality as any Audi or BMW in the same class. That is the target market after all.

        My thoughts:
        • Batteries are both better & cheaper. This will eventually trickle back up to the S & X.
        • Smaller size is just to make it more average. Many people feel that the S is too wide in particular.
        • Body will still be aluminum. Parts of frame will be steel.
        • Minimalist interior is solely to ease manufacturing.
        • I expect comfort/luxury on par with the S. But that's not a very high bar to meet.
        • Fit & finish will end up being better, due to more automation in the manufacturing.

Meh. The BMW 320i barely has the equivalent accoutrements of the Toyota Camry LE that costs around $10,000 less than it. If that is sufficient for them, then it should be fine for a Model ☰. Since I don't care about 'luxury' at all, that will be perfectly fine for me. That doesn't mean the Model ☰ will be substandard or lacking in any way compared to its competitors. I hope that features I want are not tied to some sort of 'Premium Package' full of things that I would not pick otherwise.

in regards to sound dampening... the ride-along video from MotorTrend on the night of the reveal is pretty impressive when they pull back into the staging area (about 6:20 into the video). When the passengers open the door(s), it is pretty amazing on the difference in the noise level.

I am unable to view the video again but.... The driver made a comment that caught my attention as well for a different reason.

He said something similar to 'we pushed the front dash as far forward as possible .... for the future of AutoPilot' Something like that....

Which leads me to believe..... that maybe the front seats will have the ability to pivot around and face the passengers. Similar to this video.... I love this video. Amazing and scary all at the same time. The future is coming....

Or for a dash designed to house a HUD projector system...

I don't believe that would require moving the dash further forward.

That video reminds me of some from AUDI, and BMW, and Nissan as well, where the underlying theme is that life will be worse with autonomous vehicles. The intention is indeed to frighten people about ... 'The FUTURE!' You know, when da gubmint comes to take away all our guns, diesel duallys, and steering wheels! BMW specifically used the catch phrase, 'The Future of Driving Will Always Include... Drivers'. You know, as if they have no intention of developing or using autonomous driving systems themselves. I think it is more of the delay tactics, hoping people will stop waiting to 'Get the NeXT Tesla!' and come buy one of their REAL CARS with an ICE instead, today. Because like the Cadillac ATS, it doesn't matter how improved the performance variant of the Lexus IS may be... It's still going to get SPANKED by the Model ≡ -- on the track, and in sales.

I felt that Lexus did a good job with the Video. Enjoy our 'today' cars now...... because soon you won't have to drive. Their autonomous car looked quite nice as well.

In terms of luxury, a designer has a much easier job making a simple interior "not look cheap" in comparison to a complicated one. Cheap interiors are most obvious when parts from various manufacturers don't fit together well, and the materials are different shades. For a very simple interior, you can use textures (like pebbling, graining) to make cheaper materials look more rich, and more expensive materials (like wood, leather) can be simple continuous shapes and more assembled automatically.

I think that the missing "bells and whistles" that Elon mentioned are likely to be those features that require labor intensive hardware (actually any hardware).
So no auto presenting handles, auto opening doors etc etc.
I'm also thinking that some options that are software only but differentiate the Model 3 from its ICE competition are likely to be either competitively priced or built in.

The benefit to that is that it's simpler. Less to break and worry about. I love the gadgets but you know they won't last forever.

I would think that the primary reason for moving the dash forward would be to offer a much larger cabin for passenger comfort. With production ramping up this month it shouldn't be long before all our speculation is laid to rest and we can start dealing with actual fact. Gonna be a VERY exciting couple of months for sure.

Agree, and have said before it appears the passenger room front to back is quite similar to the Model S. But if the tesla driver was speaking directly to dash placement relative to autopilot advances, there was some other point he started to make beyond roominess.

Indeed - I hope they shy away from physical complexity to reduce cost but embrace it on the software side so we get all the software bells and whistles that have a zero production cost but translates into a huge customer benefit.

I certainly am going for full autonomy!

Yes. Exactly. Thats my point. What does passenger comfort have to do with autopilot.

If the front seat was to turn around, you would need dash room. That would also include a retractable steering wheel.

I know this all sounds crazy, but I think I'm not actually far off. Some here don't like to speculate, dream or start rumours and I get that, but..... what are the chances?

Just dreaming out loud. Hope someone here enjoys my dream as much as I do.

I love those pictures of drivers in autonomous car mockups facing backwards in their reclined seats, reading a magazine, sipping a coffee.
Then I also image how wide the car would have to to let that happen without going through a set of pretzel inspired exercises - it would be funny to see, but not likely.
I think the chances of Model 3 having rotating front seats are pretty much nil :)
