Someone on Electrek posted this in the comments about Tesla charging.
It looks like an underground supercharger with active thermal management, which would have to be automated.

Is this the future of the FSD capable supercharger with a version of the the snake charging arm?

Did some research on the Patent number in the link, and this came up

        http://documents.allpatents.com/l/345294297/US20170096073A1

EDIT- However it looks like its a patent about advanced cooling systems for the battery, suggesting preparation for faster charging speeds... Did not read anything about a charger from the floor...?

This medium tech home charger is intended to come out of the floor only when the space owner's vehicle is in automatic parking mode and requesting a charge. It relies on the existing autonomous capabilities of the car to eliminate all high maintenance robot functions from the anchored device.

Here is how it looks just before the car exhaust like coupler backs into it.

Here is how it performs relative to onboard and 1st generation inductive chargers.

And here is how it looks from the ground side looking up when it is folded down. It is about 2.5 inches thick and can be surface mounted with a 15 degree ramp to make the 18 inch square into a meter square, or it can be flush mounted in a pocket.FullSizeRender-3.jpg

This electric toothbrush like "close coupled inductive" charger 1st prototype maybe too downmarket for the 3. I see it as a niche product for people who want the combination of small carbon footprint, safety and convenience. Luxury car buyers will likely prefer to double the carbon footprint of charging and go with a much sexier 'no moving parts' inductive charger.
