I may have to skip the "3", and wait for the "Y" because...

    I figured I'd start this discussion for those of us who may be disappointed in the Model 3, and are considering delaying entering the Electric Vehicle "club" because I/we may choose to wait instead for the Model Y.
    Discuss away...

    In my case, my daily driver is a I.C.E. "crossover" called the KIA Sportage. It was built in 08/08, so it's a 2009 model year that we bought used from a dealer. It's paid for, and it's functional. But, it holds absolutely ZERO loyalty in my heart. Why? Partly because the driver's seat is horrible for long (325-ish mile) road trips. The money we were spending on car payments (plus a bit more) is now instead going into separate savings account for a Tesla.

    But... [insert drum roll sound here] I was able to get a tow hitch/receiver installed onto it.

    If you look at this Youtube video from "OCDetailing"...

    Jump forwards to 3:07, and you will see the IMPLICATION that the Model 3 does not have a tow receiver.

    I concede that this is a feature that may not yet be available in only the initial run of vehicles.

    But... If it turns out to not be available later on, standard or optional... [insert groan sound effect from Addams Family's Lurch character here] ...that would mean the "3" is not for me (rhyme not intended).

    I'm already fearing the lack of storage space in a smaller size sedan that the 3 is versus the space in a Kia Sportage.
    If one throws in the lack of a tow receiver and/or the additional cost for one, hmmm... I may have to wait for a Model Y, and HOPE that it turns out to be something similar to my Sportage.


    What say you people?

    * Does anyone else have similar apprehension about the 3 versus the Y ???
    * What are your concerns?

    p.s.: I've also just learned about the Nissan "eNV200". Maybe that would normally be a competitor except for one thing: That 325-ish mile road trip I mentioned above? There are ZERO (non-Tesla) fast DC chargers (CCS or CHAdeMO) along our route. Time will tell...

    I would say it is incredibly rare that I ever see a sedan towing anything. Seemingly reserved for RVs, pickups, and to a lesser extent SUVs in my neck of the woods.

    I get that if a feature is critical for you, not having that feature would be a deal breaker — pretty much the definition of a critical feature.

    Out of curiosity, what do you plan to tow with the car?

    I still hold out hope that there will be an aftermarket hitch available for the 3, though it is sounding like it will be a total PITA to install something like that.

    I had a hitch installed on my Leaf for my bike rack, which I used at least weekly to get my bikes to and from work. Installation of a hitch on the i3, however, would have required bumper modification which I wasn't willing to do for a leased vehicle. I swore that I'd make sure my next EV was at least capable of a hitch.

    There is nothing worse than putting a dirty bike *inside* a car, especially if you are paying north of $40K for said car. Plus, it takes < 10s to put my bike on my hitch rack, you can't take anyone in the back seats if the bike is back there, etc. etc.

    I sill wouldn't be sure M3 won't have a hitch. Musk's recent comments weren't clear as to whether a hitch is a "not now" or a "not ever" situation. He had previously stated that it would.

    I'd wait to see how the 4wd/air suspension version is set up.

    Correct, it's a deal breaker.
    I have a small 6' wide by 8' long utility trailer for trips to the local home improvement stores, etc..
    But, the main use would be for a bicycle carrier, and eventually a (vertically oriented) ski carrier.
    (Roof rack might be a nice addition, but it's NOT a substitute for the hitch/receiver.)

    So just more questions (not challenging you though of course)...

    Why isn’t s roof rack feasible for bikes? I don’t ever take my bike anywhere so I’m mostly curious here.

    For trips to home improvement store — I’ve thought through this one and figure to take my wife’s car (sorry) or for bigger stuff borrow my parent’s Range Rover and/or rent a UHaul.

    For skis — you got me. I rent skis and they magically appear ;)

    I already own the various attachments and trailer. Everyone i know who is not an adult male hates roof racks.

    • You have to lift your bike onto the roof of your car. That's not easy.
    • You have to make sure your bike doesn't fall over while you're getting it in position.
    • You have to remember that you now drive a taller car. Fun with low-hanging trees.

    Maybe that button should return @Michael Russo. Especially since being optimistic appears to br an essential quality needed in reference to Model 3. In other words, it appears necessary to deal with disappointments.

    We will (have to) wait another year anyway. Learn what the total cost of ownership will be of LRB + AWD + SAS + TH.
    Hopefully we'll know enough about Model Y by then, to decide whether that's an alternative. And in the mean time we can drive a cheap car and save a bit more.
    Isn't that an optimistic approach?

    My wife and I are working on a classified project....but until that project comes to fruition, we're OK with a Model 3.....however, a Model Y may be more....demographically-appropriate around the time it goes into production.

    Early model 3 s won't tow but I fully expect model 3 s will be capable of towing shortly ...once production ramps up..

    I'm not shopping the Y because the federal tax credit will be gone and if I want or need another electric vehicle I'll shop one of the new comers such as jaguar ipace or Volvo xc40 ev s...that are still eligible...for the 7500..

    Yes I'm a whore but then I'm really going to buy the model 3 and if it's the vehicle it's supposed to be? I'll keep the model 3 for many years to come and never buy a cuv...(although that jaguar ipace is pretty dam attractive looking)

    I'm on the list with jaguar for the ipace...if it comes in priced right...and I can get one maybe I'll add the ipace to the model 3 ..dump the Cadillac and forego the upcoming mid engine corvette as a new toy.

    My ultimate plan is to get a model Y. I'm getting the model 3 now because I want to take advantage of the tax credit, and I don't want to wait any longer to take all of the road trips I plan on taking. I will be holding on to my Jeep in semi-retirement for all of my towing, hauling, and deep snow/blizzard driving needs up until I can trade them both in for a Y.

    I decided to skip the model 3 because I’ll be coming from a Toyota sienna van. The model X is just not in my price range right now. I can also wait until 2020 to get a model Y. Falcon wing doors or not I like the space that the model y would bring over the model 3. But depending on what happens when the model Y is announced if they start doing a fire sale on 2016 2017 model X. Then I may go for that .

    If there is variant of BMW 3 that can tow, you bet Model 3 will get the capability. I predict Model 3 AWD will be able to tow.
