I'm about this close (holds fingers up pretty close together) to putting my money down on a reservation. My only real reservation is that I won't see the car for well over a year. Probably closer to 18 months, from what I've heard. Anyone correct me if I'm wrong, but we haven't even seen any of the working beta cars out and about yet.

I know that I will get one, I've already gotten "permission" from the lady (aka - kitchen pass) so now it's just a matter of deciding when to pull the trigger. I may pony up soon after the betas are cruising the streets of the Bay Area and some initial reviews come out with positive things to say. Still trying to decide on what color to pick.... hmmmm... First world problems!

Curious what color others are selecting: Post your color choice below.

@inspirelife , couple of points...

If I am not mistaken you are in Utah... therefore if you take a reasonably short hike West, you are likely to see the car within the next 6 months in CA... :)

You are of course totally free to decide when you 'pony up', yet let me remind you that the longer you hold your breath, the longer before the car will be on your South Salt Lake City driveway... and in any case the grand is fully refundable if you don't like it when you see it (by the way, in this case, I do believe there see good doctors for this affliction :D).

As for colors, suggest you cruise through the forum for existing threads on this topic. Lots already...
e.g. https://model3ownersclub.com/threads/which-color-for-your-model-3.890/

Enjoy!

I would put your deposit on ASAP. As soon as the final reveal happens (June/July) the orders will double I would think. (Welcome btw)

You have nothing to lose now besides the $1,000 which is refundable. You could back out at any time though I really doubt you would. This is going to be so far beyond what anyone has seen to date on any EV at this price point. The only other EV that would match/beat it now is the S. Tesla has worked really hard on improving prior issues with quality by now having access to A+ suppliers, a wealth of knowledge, and a team of Automotive veterans that they have hired as of recently. Your money and choice will be safe. Go for it! I'l probably go white or dark grey.

Agreed on all counts above. Jump in now, you can always bail if your mind and get a refund.

But I'm with @Steve C , once the production cars are revealed and seen on the streets there will be renewed interest from new customers and fence sitters.

To your point Trev, Let say the new customer or a fence sitter is from California or a Tesla owner and made the reservation after the Part 3 reveal or June / July. Will they get ahead of all non tesla owners who reserved from eastern states or will they get their model 3 in 2018 after the first round of reservation holders get theirs ?

I doubt it. Tesla has a huge backlog to get through and they've stated very clearly that employees and founders get the first cars, then current Model S owners, then the general public. Geographically they will deliver for the west coast first then move east then onto Europe and Asia later in 2018/2019

So, if you place a reservation now you will get your car AFTER the general public rollout is well underway and has reached some of the east coast. Only tesla knows the exact logistics and schedule but the initial North American backlog has to be take care of as a priority I would surmise. However if their ramp is really fast then it might not be a real issue.

I've seen you mention founders a couple times... where was this mentioned by Tesla? I've only ever seen them say staff then regionally west to east with owners given priority within each region, but nothing about 'founders'. Based on R/S/X, there were a handful (under 20?) as founders series before the Signatures started delivering. I've not seen this same said for the 3.

No real reason to wait considering you can get it back with the click of a mouse, don't even have to make an awkward cancellation phonecall. As others have said the wait is only going to get more extreme, probably part of the reason we don't see beta cars yet. Want to keep a lid on the hypetrain.

Exactly... Yet, building on your point, @TrevP , I cannot imagine someone in CA reserving now getting her/his car BEFORE reservation holders from other world area (EU, AP & Oceania) who got in line 6-12 months ago.
Trust this is what you meant from your reminder in your first paragraph yet prefer to clarify the beginning of the second! :)

but there are still people that 'think' that the statement of existing owners will have priority means they will go ahead of everyone - even if they reserve next september.

Yes, I hear you, @MelindaV ... yet, while this is understandable in the early years of a 'new' car company like T≡SLA still is (relatively speaking of course), it would make little commercial sense once they have the capability to produce between 500k to 1 million cars per year... IMHO...

To the OP, Go for it! most of us here have been waiting a few weeks short of a year from placing our reservations and boy has it gone fast! Secure your place in the line, and reserve today!

What are you waiting for! If you can afford a Model 3 you can afford the $1000 to get in line. There is nothing to lose as you are not committing to purchase and can get a full refund. No one but Tesla knows the number of reservations now but once the production cars show up on the roads in two weeks it is going to jump. In July if they are on time and do an event it will take off like a Falcon 9.

Elon said they would deliver first cars to employees and company founders. They're not doing a "founders" series however.

If you try to take delivery in CA you get hit with the CA tax on top of your state tax when you register.

Most states will let you reduce the sales tax you need to pay to them by the amount you were required to pay in CA.

I agree with all of the comments above... Plus, don't forget the US federal tax credit. The sooner you get the car, the better your chances for getting a higher amount. Tesla should implement an honor system for delivering to early reservation holders that supersedes the geographic location rule, to some degree.

They're this close :) - about halfway, I think - to rolling out that magic number 200k EV, which would then trigger the tax credit phase out process 2 quarters thereafter. With 500k - 700k Model-3-only reservation holders worldwide (as in right now!) I wonder why anyone on the fence would ever hold back.

Frankly, I'd be worried NOT to pull the trigger.

A few pros for reserving earlier:

- no risk 100% refundable reservation fee
- greater chance of receiving some kind of tax credit (US), as mentioned above
- # of reservations is expected to skyrocket after the final reveal in a few months
- no more oil changes, transmission issues, gas stops, motor vehicle emissions inspections, smog, etc.
- that million mile warranty is unheard of
- you get your car earlier!
- you gotta have that Tesla grin

You're welcome :D
