As promised, I wrote my impressions of the Model 3 in the flesh.

Bottom line... The party that Tesla throws might be free, but it's pricey on the back end.

We left it with reservation for 3 PowerWall 2s, not sure if I'll ever need all three, but what the heck...

...and we're looking forward to taking delivery of our 2 Model 3 reservations.

    Blog post here.

@AEDennis , sorry for the late reply. You mention the Model 3 was bigger than you had hoped. Would it be a fair assumption based on your experience with the S and seeing the 3 in person that you'd estimate the car to be about 90% of the exterior dimensions of an S??

That's Motor Trend's estimate, I'm curious if your corroborate that number? Not going to hold you to it though.

@TrevP... I would put it closer to 80-85% the size of an S...

It's a big car... then again the S is a huge car and the X is even bigger.

So where does that 12 inch difference (184 to 196") - that I've seen reported (and, as I wrote in another thread tonight, echoed by Ryan this weekend in his episod #77 of RTL, during which he stated 'a foot shorter') - which by the way would only be 6% (?) - come from?
In another words, we have Motor Trend @ 90% (i.e. close to 20", or 50 cm, less than an S - half a meter btw, which is quite a bit, bringing Model ≡ close to a 3-Series, >4.5m) which could make sense).
Dennis' 'up, close & personal', hence very valuable assessment would make it a whopping 30-40" shorter, i.e. 75 cm to 1m (!) shorter (in other words, 4.1-4.3m), more like a Golf (4.26m) or a BMW 1-Series (4.33m)...

I know we expect the interior to be almost as roomy, so it's not that I'm really worried - + I know I'll love the car! - yet I must plead guilty for being a bit confused...

Let me put it this way....

I am using my eyes and memory during a party.

It is smaller than an S... I did not measure it...

But if your saying that the 1 series is the 80-85% of an S size, then the 3 is bigger. I drove an ActiveE and that is a fully electric BMW that used about 95% of a 1 series body that eventually became the basis for an i3.

So, perhaps those that measured the length of the 3 are more accurate, I was using my eyes and "gut" to approximate the size of the 3... either way, it's bigger than what I had hoped for the vehicle.

(It's also much bigger than a Roadster... but many cars are as well.)

Besides, I was partying during this report, so, alcohol may have been imbibed.;)

based on the MotorTrend measurements, the footprint of the Model ☰ will be 87% that of the Model S
                (S: 104.8SF and 3: 92SF)

                  Well...

That's firmly between the 85% on the high side of my estimate and the 90% figure that @TrevP first provided...

Either way, it's not at the "smaller" size that would have been a home run for me.

Thank you for clarification, @AEDennis and also to you, @MelindaV , for this additional input... !

All this exchange is showing is how eager we all are to touch & feel the car on a sunny, sober day... :D
I'm going to still anticipate something ~180-184" (4.4-4.5m), similar in exterior length as a 3-Series, yet clearly more comfy inside... Can't wait! :)

                      @Michael Russo...

As an early Model S owner, I have always made the assertion that the S is a BMW 7 series size and price with a 3 series or 5 series interior...

Newer Model S and Model X interiors are now better than older Model S interiors, but I'm not sure if it's equivalency, yet...

So, let's not assume that the Model 3 interior would be more comfortable than a 3 series BMW. If it is, then that will be good, but I expect it to be closer to a 1 series interior.

Fully agree, Dennis! I was using 'comfortable' as a loose alternative to 'roomy' not to repeat what I had written earlier. In other words, from what was disclosed at the reveal, particularly during test drives, passengers on the back (thx to the extended wheelbase) will have more space hence sit more 'comfortably' than in a 3-Series I suspect, which was never known to have a large back area... ;)

Thanks for the input. Tesla has only ever said it was close to an A4 , I don't recall Elon ever mentioning a 3 series specifically but they're all in the same category. I used to have a 328I and it was fantastic car, it was my favourite by far and I've owned a lot of cars of the years ;)

Elon's funny that way... He likes to compare the cars to Benz S class and Audi.

However, as former BMW faithful, the rear wheel drive S and Roadster drive more like the BMWs that we've owned in the past.

As for 3 series, we used to have a 323Cic and 328i (both convertibles) and they were great cars. Just lost their status with me when I started driving the ActiveE.

Wow, guys, we're in the same place! ;)
My two all-time favorite set of wheels were the 328is (Coupe) & 3.2l V6 M3 I leased in Akron, OH during 95/96! Those were my last 2 gas cars, then I switched to turbodiesel sedans (then my current X5) which, although better & better over time, never quite compared... Big surprise... :D

Would have gone T≡SLA for a couple of years already if I could have afforded it... :)
I'll bridge to Midnight S≡R≡NITY with a gasoline powered hatchback as of YE when I retire...

An aspect I haven't read till now, is that the Model 3 has different dimensions than we are used to. Larger cabin, shorter sloping front, short trunk, bigger wheelbase than most cars.
So the car will be roomy inside, due to the big cabin. Making it look smaller on a picture and bigger close up.
                          I kind of like that.

@MichelT3 , we kinda did start going there (cf. #5 & 11), yet you're adding interesting elements ('shorter sloping front, short trunk...''). So, yes, it will be a very different experience than what we have known so far in this category...
                            And noooo, you won't like that! You'll (We'll!) loooove it ! :)

I like the aspect that Model 3 will look different from 'normal' cars.
Where Model S looks like a huge luxurious sedan, somewhat like a Jaguar. With an 'unnecessary' long front, as if there is a V8 under the bonnet.
Model 3 on the other hand 'shows' that there is no huge ICE inside.
I will LOVE the car mostly for the technology that it carries.

I know I'm a minority, but I really like a 'cozy' (as others would say tight or cramped) interior. I like feeling tucked in ;)

WOW! @MelindaV you'd like to be tucked in and cozy three times?
Maybe we should get you a warm blanket? :p:D
It may be even more comforting :) that the roominess will be most apparent in the back seat.
