The delightfully and magically insane thing about the Information Age is that you can wake up in the morning, half-thinking that you are just too lazy to do something, but when you fatefully log in, you discover that not only has somebody else already done it for you, but somebody else has already linked you into it.

The hive mind strikes again! Maybe I've joined the Borg Collective. Colors!!!! Yep!!! Resistance is futile!

Quel dommage! I recall that I once boldly said "engage" with regard to doing such things for oneself, but now, I can't even get my own Earl Grey out of a replicator. I merely answer whenever they call me Locutus... The Collective has supplied me with seven of nine different colored Model 3's for further spectrographic analysis. I must return to task.

Chances are the Model 3 won't be offered in a light blue... but that matte gray they showed off was sexy as hell. That's probably what I'll be going with.

How cool would it be if you could pick your actual paint color this way? With a fully automated paint phase, one could also automate the mixing process and match it to the order's CMYK values (or whatever it might be for automotive paint). Just keep the sprayers supplied with the right ratio via some supply lines and have on-demand custom paint colors. Naturally there are probably all kinds of issues that would take some engineering to address (easier said than done), but if an auto manufacturer were so inclined...

Since most everyone's monitor is not calibrated, what you see is not what you will get.

Perhaps, though I suspect most people would not find the difference significant enough to care, as evidenced by choosing existing colors in the configurator. Were the differences significant enough, that would not currently be a viable means of choosing a paint color. For those that did care, there's no reason a manufacturer couldn't supply fan decks, adopt a color standard (à la Pantone) or both.

Most people are ignorant to how they see colors on screens and in real life, how color temperature of light and surrounding space influence everything. Not to mention variations in matte vs gloss. It would be a train wreck of people going, "that's not what I ordered" if they are given that granular a choice. That being said I'd love it and probably take a month to decide. My guess is that most cars are more complicated than that having plastics that have to be color matched during the final design phase.
