What is the use of the camera in your opinion

  1. Light sensor for the auto-dimming mirror

  2. Tesla Network. Need cameras recording everything that goes on inside the car

  3. AI lip reading

  4. Open the pod bay door

  5. Deploy face tracking technology to help manage car

  6. Meet future legal requirements for higher levels of autonomy

  7. Several of above

Not sure - could be just a light sensor for the auto-dimming mirror.

One thing I noticed from that photo - the battery icon is showing the estimated range beside it, rather than the percentage. I saw at least one test drive video where the driver was a little frustrated that she could only see the percentage, and not a range estimation. I wonder if she didn't know of the option, or if it doesn't exist on the production units (which I would find hard to believe). I haven't see it on any of the test drive videos from over the weekend though. Has anyone else?

And - is that even a real photo? It looks too perfect - like a render!

It might be a camera in preparation for the Tesla Network.

If I ever decide to add my car to the Network to make money for me while I'm at work, I would definitely want cameras recording everything that goes on inside the car.

It might be a camera to monitor driver alertness as higher levels of autonomy are achieved. See my post #128 of May 22 in Autonomous car tech thread.

Current ANU research using a Tesla and face tracking technology is looking at point of control transfer between car and driver. It is funded by the ACT government to help in drafting autonomous driving legislation. The face tracking could be particularly relevant when we have Level 4 autonomy but are still short of Level 5.

The aperture is too tiny for a camera. The position isn't optimal for recording passengers either.
Either a sensor, or just a rubber grommet.

The position roughly corresponds to the center of the windshield mount, that's why i thought it might be a bolt or a grommet. But it might be a rear view mirror dimming sensor too.

It could be an ambient light sensor allowing the car to switch from day mode to night mode for the screen.

It's probably configurable in the settings regarding what displays... percentage or range (hopefully both is an option).

Could be! It would be neat if the Tesla app allowed us to view the camera (if it's a camera) in real-time.

I think that's probably integrated into the screen bezel.
The rear view mirror juts out a bit under that area, so the sensor would be in the shade most of the time, except when the sun hits it through the roof.

Or maybe simply via a tap on the battery indicator.
I vaguely remember the driver ahagge mentioned, poking it while complaining she can't see the range.

The photo isn't proof alone, it could easily be a screw with plastic washer or cover, or as mentioned an ambient light sensor, especially considering it's next to an auto-dimming mirror. Although you would think the rear autopilot camera could perform that function.

More interesting is in the Electrek comments:

Worth noting - the headline is an assumption. It wasn't confirmed by Tesla.

So assuming it is a camera, I bet we see a run on these...

Don't get me wrong, a passenger camera (or cameras) makes perfect sense.
It's just that i find that particular position seemingly awkward for one.

It would have to have a significant tilt downwards (or half of the frame would be roof), and the lower part of the frame would be obscured by the rear view mirror, which projects outwards from the plane of the camera.

Might still be one, but my money's on it being somewhere else.

    Confirmed as a camera.
    "
Today, Tesla confirmed to Electrek that the Model 3 is equipped with the camera, but it is not currently active. It will only become active after future software updates, which Tesla didn’t want to elaborate on."
Please see electrek article. I can't post links yet.
