So with a heavy heart I had to cancel my reservation for my M3. With my current options with charging at home and the just plain cost for 1st reservation model. It's just not feasible at this time for me. I am so excited for what is coming out from Tesla these days and will for sure be looking at getting into one of the vehicles in the coming future. Who knows maybe when Model Y hits the streets, I will be in a better position to buy.

For now to just tip my toe in the EV market I am looking into getting a 2017 Ford Fusion Energi. It's got roughly 22miles on full EV mode which is the 2 miles over my distance from home to work. Of course the 0-60 is horrible compared to Tesla, but I can charge on a 110V at home. Figured I would lease for 3 years and by then the infrastructure and footprint of Tesla in the South East of the U.S. will be much larger.

Still a big fan of all this Tesla stuff and will be watching the posts as you guys take your deliveries. Good news I can still get some Federal Tax back on my Ford purchase.

You do know that you don't need to get the 1st reservation model, right? Wait for the base model, still get the tax rebate?

Cheaper than the cheapest Ford Fusion Energi.

      Thank you kindly.

I'm with @Topher. Unless it was a timing thing for you, the standard battery Model 3 is just a few months further away and will still get you part of the credit.

I understand your position, but you do know you can charge a Tesla on 110V at home too, right?
About 3 miles per hour or so, so more than enough for an overnight charge to compensate for your commute.

I hear you all, but honestly it's the timing and the financing through Tesla. I can get a better lease option on the Energi. For right now they are giving great financing terms on the Energi, and if I am going to wait another year or more for the M3 that I truly want. Why not run around in a nicer car than my 20 year old pickup. Plus I would be getting to see how the pure ev mode runs and get used to charging up a car for awhile.

            Best Regards

For the M3 I really want, it's going to be December 2018. I just feel that since I never have owned an EV type vehicle. This would be good practice for me. I know you guys think I am crazy for cancelling, but I only reserved in April of this year. You guys have been on this roller coaster for a lot longer. Again, love Tesla and their cars. Just think that for the time being I need to go in another direction.

Just a heads up you'll be waiting a very long time to get your refund back. I had a second reservation I canceled and I'm on the 5th week of waiting. Spoke to a rep and she was saying they're way behind due to an accounting issue.

                    Gotcha.
I was actually briefly considering something similar, back when my delivery estimate was still saying early 2019.

                    Very sorry to hear @scmaxwell99
Remember, your reservation is not a requirement to order, and you can hold on to it for a year or more. Might make sense if you have a chance of being ready late 2018.
Also remember you don't have to go with Tesla's financing. Any bank will offer car loans, and the best are from credit unions if you can join one.
If it's purely budgetary, be aware Ford is currently knocking $12k off the Focus electric, dropping it below 10 grand.
Also it looks like there may be incentives in your state to cover the cost of a charger.

It's a cancellation, not a resignation to not eventually have a 3 or a different Tesla for that matter. As BigBri noted, you may be waiting quite a while for your refund, so I hope that doesn't cause you any problems getting the Fusion.

Fwiw, I also recently cancelled my 3 reservation. Too many compromises with the 3 for what I want. The model Y or the eventual pickup is a better fit for my intended use. I'm still a stock holder and we still have a Tesla in the family, so it's maybe less impactful than for some that cancel.

Sounds like you'll be looking again in three years. You'll be able to buy a new 3 then, but also maybe a Y, a pickup truck or a great deal on a CPO S or 3 as well!

I've had my energi for 4 years. I have the titanium level. It's a really good car, except for the whopping 8 cubic feet of trunk space. Horrible! Can't even fit my groceries back there. I can say the technology is amazing. I actually picked it over a Model S (in 2013) because of the tech (ACC, LKA, remote start, prewarming or precooling, awesome stereo, self parking, blind spot warning, cross traffic alert) Not a bad car to hold you over until you get a Tesla. FYI, it also now works with Alexa/Amazon Echo.

But 22 miles of range for a 20 mile commute? Considering winter + terrain + speed + (whatever) can result in half... man, basically still an ICE, no? It isn't available here so I know next to nothing about it.

Instead of a Ford, I can recommend getting a used Volt, if you can find them. I got a 2012 for under 12K, and I usually get AT LEAST 40 miles, sometimes up to 50, on electric. It's the second most fun car I've ever driven, after my 1992 Mazda Protege. The Volt lives outside and I charge it outside with no problems.

The Fusion Energi is good practice! I have a 2016 now (incredible lease deal). Previously I had a CMax Energi. Every time the ICE comes on I wish I had a full EV. My lease is up in Fall of 2018. My Model 3 should be delivered as early as September 2018. When your lease is up you will have many choices! So your cancellation stings, but you are on a good path.

Wanted to update you all. I decided to nix the Ford Fusion Energi idea and went with the Hyundai Ioniq hybrid. The car drives great and you can't beat the price tag on it. Since I don't have a heavy foot, I mostly get to drive on the EV side of it with the gas engine occasionally kicking in. Getting around 56-59mpg on the car right now.

Nice pick... I have and love my 2015 Hyundai Sonata. Excellent car for the price!

Sure yet wouldn't it had been better to take the full BEV? Maybe not available where you are @scmaxwell99 ?

I don't have a high enough tax to get the full $7,500 so to save money and of course they were doing a great deal on these new cars. I decided to go with the Ioniq. If I could take advantage of that tax credit, I may have gone a different route.
