I have been shopping for a model X and had a question. I have crunched the numbers and can get a CPO 2016 Model X with all the goodies that I want or get an Inventory model X with very few options (actually it will be a bit over my budget). My question is would you guys / girls spend that amount of money on a car with the older "maxed out" processing power of the first version autopilot? I love the CPO car but my second reason for buying a Tesla is the autopilot. On the other hand I am thinking full self driving is probably 5 or more years away (which I will still be paying on either)!!! I'm stuck.

My understanding is:
  • HW1 autopilot currently has better software than HW2 autopilot
  • HW1 cars will _never_ get a full self-driving upgrade. They don't have the sensors or the computing power.
HTH!

That's what I understand too. Hence, my dilemma. Do I spend a ton of cash on a car that will never have self driving, but has everything else I want?

If you can handle the payments, Ap1 actually is working very well, better than AP2. Avoid the Xs with lower VIN numbers since they will have more issues that were worked out later in production. The X is an incredible car, and I was seriously thinking of getting one, but the price was causing me grief.

I think it will be at least another year for the first release of full self driving on the latest hardware, and I think it will take many more years to truly handle complicated side streets and cities. Save yourself the huge chunk of money with the CPO X, and in 2-3 years you can decide if it is worth trading in for a new model, or by then you can probably just swap it out for a Model Y.
