Does anyone think Tesla would ever do this? They are so backordered that this could help resolve it. I bet there would be many reservation holders willing to do this if they are not thrilled with the final production Model 3.

That car is going to have the same problem, so in reality it becomes a delay of the same problem.

They want to get you to jump to Model S, not a further delay of capturing your money.

EDIT: If you're not thrilled with the Model 3 the deposit you made is fully refundable so you can always get it back up until an order is placed.

Y will most likely come out in early 2020. May be in a limited number in late 2019 if we are lucky.

If you have reservation for 3, you will definitely get it before Y comes out.

Since, Y would almost directly compete with 3 for customers, it would be interesting to see how tesla will make sure they don't have Osborne effect on 3. The Y announcement/reveal may not be as early as we had with 3.

Besides, Y would most likely have a much bigger order backlog than 3.

I would not be surprised if Y preorders would eclipse 3.

I feel tesla is going to have a big problem this time next year. When someone goes into the Tesla store and puts a order in for a 3. When they hear they won't get it for another 6-9 months, they will lose a lot of potential customert. Especially if they can't convert these people into Model S customers because of their budget.

They always had that problem. Can't make enough cars to satisfy demand. They are trying to scale up at an unprecedented rate.

Hopefully, they will have more capacity with new factories to be announced this year. It will take time for them to be built. In the meantime, their biggest problem will continue, can't supply products to customers fast enough.

Elon once mentioned about a Chinese customer who ordered an X, when the car arrived he was so angry because he has to wait for months that he banged the car!! Hilarious.

Elon said that is the reason they don't fan the demand. They simply can't meet the demand.

Customers will wait for what they want (if they can). Of course the if for those that are coming off of a lease or just totaled a car and can't wait.

This is the current problem, not a new problem. This is a "good" problem if you're Tesla.

Think about the opposite with the other auto manufacturers cranking out cars to dealers just to sit on lots in the hopes that someone comes in to buy the car.

Gee, seems a good problem to have ... more customers than cars. I expect they will try to ramp up more, or a second factory.

With production planned to meet demand ...of say 500k model 3 s a year...the first year ramp up should be the only delay.
