    Hello!

I pre-ordered my Tesla Model 3 on 3/31/16 at 3:00PM in Illinois. In a couple days I will be moving to San Francisco, California. My Tesla pre-order form I said I live in Chicago, Illinois. I would rather recieve my Tesla in San Francisco, than travel 2,145 miles back to Illinois. How would I approach this situation without Tesla thinking I sold my reservation spot? I wont be able to pick up my Tesla in Illinois.

      As simple as @MelindaV said.

Now the really interesting point will be if you move up in the queue...

          Concur wirh sf and Melinda.

Elon will give us details about delivery plan on 28th. I think only initially (first 2/3months) they will deliver in California. After that other areas will start getting it in parallel to California.

You might actually end up getting it earlier and with better state incentives.

Welcome to California @Kriffic! San Francisco is one of the premier cities in the world, and I've seen a bunch of them - great food of all types, beautiful vistas, interesting Victorian architecture, and NEVER a dull moment! It is relatively expensive to live there but it is worth every centavo!

You have a very active Tesla Owners Club in the Bay Area and the Fremont factory is just down the road a bit. The TESLA 3 will be a dream to drive on those steep San Fran hills. Enjoy, we are here to help!

We talked to Tesla Headquarters. I have HUGE NEWS!!!!

              This is what they said:

"We are almost confident that Model 3 reservation holders will get the tax credit. Its almost positive that the tax credit will last until LATE 2019."

Lets say you live in CST timezone. The people who recieve their car first in CST timezone will be the people who reserved their car first NOT BY STATE, BY TIMEZONE.

PST is almost guarenteed to get $7,500 rebate, CST $7,500-$4,000, EST $4,000-$2,000. Thats what the Tesla Employee said. WITH ALL AWD DRIVE.

People who live in California will get their car WITH AWD in Summer of 2018. They will roll out the RWD M3s first across america, then AWD.

So... I don't think this is very accurate.

First of all the federal credit amounts are $7,500 and then it phases down to $3,750 and then finally $1,875 before it's gone.

The "phase out" begins when Tesla sells their 200,000th car in the US.

It is widely believed and anticipated that this will happen in Q4 this year with a big push on Model 3's or early Q1 2018 if the Model 3 rollout is not as heavy.

                Let's pretend car 200,000 drops on January 10, 2018.

All US buyers (that personally qualify) get $7,500 if they took delivery by 6/30/2018.

All US buyers (that personally qualify) get $3,750 if they took delivery between 7/1/2018 and 12/31/2018.

All US buyers (that personally qualify) get $1,875 if they took delivery between 1/1/2019 and 6/30/2019.

All US buyers get $0 if they took delivery after 6/30/2019.

So for starters, the credit won't last past the middle of 2019 unless something goes horribly wrong with the roll out of Model 3.

Next as a day 1 (pre-unveil) reservation holder in Florida, I would be deeply upset if I didn't get the car by Q1 2018 thus qualifying for the $7,500 credit.

The rollout does move from west to east and there is a factor of what specs you get (noting that I am going with the spec that is available from day 1).

Thats what the Tesla employee said. I am just relying the message to here. (And I was rounding the tax credit numbers, because I was too lazy to type all.the specific numbers).

Unfortunately to some extent I believe they're very much so in the dark when it comes to Model 3.

I'm hoping that timezone thing turns out to be true. I'm 3.5 hours inland from "the west coast" and I've always wondered if I'll be biased against because my address... despite having to go to the coast to pick it up anyway. Timezone would eliminate that bias.

But I'm in Canada, so even if true it doesn't mean it applies.

As for moving states and jumping up the queue... I was told "yes". I asked before if I moved to California (from Canada), could I keep my place in line. They responded saying I wouldn't only keep my place, I'd get it way sooner as I'd be part of the California roll-out. They just go by the address on file, presumably as of the time that "zone" is invited to purchase.

So I placed my reservation at ~10:15 am EST before the unveil. Maybe I should move in with my sister in Palo Alto... that's a 7:15 am PST reservation time!

Except that I really doubt it is based on time rather than sequence :) lol. But yeah, you'd move up. If you have a sister in Palo, I'd really consider it if I were you. You'd probably get it months ahead and you'd have a nice road trip to test it out.

So it's certainly worth considering and an excuse to see my sister too. Just not sure on the logistics on picking up the car in California when it will be registered in Florida and what the implications are (if any).

I don't think it would be much. People buy out of state all the time. You'd need an in-transit permit/plate/whatever and you register it when you get home. I've been looking into it for here (Canada) because Ontario offers $14k off while BC is only $5k, but most of the research that comes up is US-based and the general theme is that it is no big deal.

I'd look into it if I were you. I saw somewhere that you said you'd be miffed if you didn't get it by Q1'18 and I think that's really stretching the optimism for East coast. I think you could be saving 3 to 6 months by picking up in Cali. Even if not, awesome road trip!

If they deliver 50k cars in 2017 I imagine an early preunveil reservation in Florida is a near lock for Q1 and the stretch is December 2017.

                    Anyway back to Cali.

I just did a little research and it seems like the only real impact is that I'd be paying 9% sales tax whereas my current sales tax here is 6% so on a $50,000 car my hit would be an extra $1,500 in tax money plus the travel cost.

It would probably be an awesome trip driving it home cross country, but not necessarily worth it from a money perspective.

I strongly recommend you put the Model 3 on a flat-bed truck. Do you really want 2,600 miles on a brand new car?

Well first of all this is an idea at best and one that I am unlikely to act on. That said, I'm buying not leasing so the mileage is hardly a concern. Besides I wouldn't fly to California to get my car and fly back home without my car.

Moving to California is really starting to grow on me, partly because of the lack of humidity, but mostly for the shorter Tesla wait time.
I'm very intimidated by the job market in the bay area though, or really the lack of job security. (Cost of living is about the same here).
