Dumb question. With the absence of keys/key fobs, how do you open the Trunk/Frunk? Please don't tell me "Touchscreen" or "Phone App". I'll shoot myself

    Screwdriver.

How do you do it on any other car without a key or fob?

      Well, this
Well, this isn't "any other car". And since they seem to be reinventing the wheel for every basic feature, I'm curious how the trunk/Frunk works

Are the four ways you listed in the first post not good enough?
I could start working on some mind control system, I would probably have it finished by the time my Model 3 arrives :)

The only other thing I can think of is the "swipe foot under the bumper" trunk/hatch release that some cars have. While nice to be handsfree, that still requires the fob to be within a few feet of the trunk so still would not work with your limitations. Also on the cars I've tried it on, it often doesn't work.

I guess another option would be to open the door with the keycard, then hit the trunk/frunk button on the touchscreen.

I think "smartphone" is going to be the preferred method. Do you not own a smartphone, @green1? Or do you simply prefer a key or fob?

      You smart phone is preferred.

      Smart watch may be possible...

Why is smart phone not good though? I have that in my hands always. It’s more likely that is in my hands over car keys ;)

How about face ID detection from one of the many cameras?
BRB, running over to the patent office...

I'm still hoping for a button on the trunk that pops it open if your smartphone is in range. That's how my current and previous cars have worked with the key fob. I never pull the fob out of my pocket and hit a button, I just hit the button on the trunk.

I have never seen a close up picture of the model 3's trunk's "handle / latch" area, there could be a button up in there (that's were it is in my current car).

How about something like the frunk and trunk just unlatch when you unlock all the doors and relatch when the doors lock or when driver is in the car with the driver's door closed. Do they need to be latched when the doors are not?

My problem with smartphones is, it sometimes requires one too many steps.
            1. Pull phone out
            2. Wake phone up with power button push
            3. Unlock phone (via password or fingerprint scanner)
            4. Close whatever App you previously had open.
            5. Go to your home screen, and Launch the Tesla App.
            6. Wait 3-5 secs for App to Load and initiate connection.
            7. Then push button to unlock Trunk.

(I also have this problem with Google Chromecast. When streaming a movie, and I want to pause/rewind, I have to turn on my phone, unlock it, and go to the Chromecast App. Whereas a physical remote is just one click)

Now, if the Trunk had a button that had some proximity detection to the phone (in your pocket, without you having to fiddle with it), and then you can just push button to unlock, that'll be nice.

If you just finished shopping and your hands are full, add "set down all items" as number one. Given the choice (if my hands were full) I'd rather hold a fob and groceries in hand, than try to open the trunk with full hands while walking to the car.

I hope I'm not making irrational justifications in my blind love for Tesla but how often are you coming out to your car with hands so full you can't go near your phone and setting down whatever made your hands full would be an issue?

Perhaps I'm so obsessed with my phone though that it's never out of my hand and I don't understand the phenomenon of hands full of "stuff" ;)

You laugh but Elon Musk has already tweeted about this, I'll have to go back and look but if I recall correctly he said something about it being a future feature but not high priority at the moment.

You may be thinking of the camera inside the car above the rear view that rumors suggest is tied to the Tesla Network and then also the front facing camera that will be used as a dash cam.

Neither are for entry into the car itself though.

No, he did confirm in a tweet the side cameras could function as facial recognition cameras.
After reading up on iPhone X, I don’t think the side AP camera is anywhere close to the phone’s facial recognition camera hardware.

The iPhone X facial recognition is WAY more advanced than anything Tesla's cameras could do. The iPhone X has a projector next to the selfie camera that projects a 3D grid of infrared dots. The selfie cam pairs with a second infrared cam and a proximity sensor to generate a 3D map of the subject's face. No fooling this thing with a picture of someone's face! The side AP cameras on Tesla has nowhere near this type of technology. They aren't even in color!

I'm in complete agreement with @green1 here. On the Model S/X, the ONLY way to open the frunk is by the inside screen or the FOB. Opening the frunk or trunk by clicking thru an app is painfully complicated. I can definitely imagine a button above the license plate for the trunk when the phone is in proximity...

Just for giggles, wouldn't it be nice if a FOB were an option that an owner could buy if they wanted to? I think the MS/MX FOBs are gorgeous and very functional. Too bad the only thing you can buy in the Model 3 store now is the car cover and the front glass roof sun shade... Tesla Model 3 Accessories Store

Phone does not have to be in proximity. Vehicle must be unlocked, then trunk will open with the trunk button.
For example, when you drive out of your garage, vehicle is already on. You exit the vehicle and just
push the trunk button. Phone/keycard is in the car, not with you. Trunk will open.

If vehicle is locked and all you have is a keycard, you swipe it at the B-pillar walk to the trunk and push the trunk button.
It will open as vehicle is unlocked. If you don't want to enter the vehicle, just close the trunk and then swipe the card
at the B-pillar again. Vehicle is locked. Trunk will not open. Nor will the doors.
