At 68 years old and saving for my Model 3, I had a frightening thought the other day about being nickeled and dimed. A model 3 has to have a speedometer of some type. There has been lots of talk about a heads up display (HUD). Here is my fear…God forbid Tesla decides to make all instrumentation appear in the upper left corner of the center monitor, UNLESS you purchase a HUD option for $500-$1,500 or more. I sincerely hope they don't remove the instrument cluster just to charge us for something else. Anybody else have similar feelings or ideas?

    No. :)

Elon wants to convert the world to sustainable transportation. That's why he runs Tesla to make electric cars. They developed the Model 3 to be an affordable electric car with good range. The last thing he wants to do is "nickle and dime" people for basic features. That would reduce the demand for the vehicle.

      No.

For me, the upper left corner of the center display would barely be arm's length away. Honestly? If you can't focus on something that close to you, you probably shouldn't be driving at all. If the car were a Porsche product, or being sold through 'independent franchised dealerships', then you might have cause for concern.

For whatever it's worth, I am pretty sure that the HUD hardware will be standard will include speedometer, warning messages and anything else that is needed for the safe operation of the car.

The cool augmented reality features will either be an option or part of some option package (maybe Auto Pilot).

This just seems like a very Tesla way of doing it

HUD is awful. My experience with it over 5 months cemented that opinion. But back on topic,I don't think Elon will bend us over very far. I'm just a few years behind you and this will be my last car.

The past 5 months, or you lived with it for 5 months several years ago?

as @InElonWeTrust I'm sure would say, trust Elon ;)
I am sure Elon/Tesla will do what's right for the buyers and options will be fair. There's a reason Tesla owners rank at the top of customer satisfaction reports. It's more than just that they personally liking the car they drive.

Wouldn't worry too much about that. There will be plenty of options but looking at the S and X there aren't any to reconfigure how the instruments or center tablet work. The idea is to make options people would want to buy, not NEED to buy. Elon would be shooting himself in the foot if the 35,000 option was a POS that needed 10k more to be a good car.

I am curious what you found awful about HUD. Any chance that it was just a poorly designed implementation? I have never used one and am hoping that it will be a good experience.

Most HUDs are a little piece of coloured glass that pops out of the dash when the car is started and you see basic information on it. Pretty much a gimmick. Don't think there is any car with an actual hud that broadcasts onto the windshield.

5 months 2 years ago. Why does it matter? It's a distraction IMO. If it was free,I would disable it immediately on ANY car.

It's distracting. It was on a late model Corvette. YMMV greatly. IMO,Some folks like it because it's the newest whiz-bang thing out there.

I was curious if it was an older HUD, or more up-to-date stuff. Sounds like the latter.

                        Yes.
I know many folks will be attracted to it but it's simply not for me. Like it mentioned before,if packages are offered,I'd hope it is done with a discount, but I don't see that happening. It will limit the options I buy, beyond non-PETA and paint.

I for one really hope for a HUD being offered (standard preferably). The little plastic piece that is offered today is in my opinion gimmicky is not what I would ever pay for. But, look up what Panasonic is working on in the way of HUD, and I see a strong possibility of what may be to come. Now, that is something I'd pay for. It would take some getting used to like any new tech, but could be a very great thing.

I agree. I see a huge safety bonus when driving yourself to have it highlight things right on your windshield it can see that maybe you can't. I had laser eye surgery which makes night driving a challenge. I'm still 20/20 but those damn bright halogen headlights are blinding. A HUD would make me feel a lot safer if it could show the cars behind the bright headlights and potential obstructions in my path.

I feel your pain. My vision was corrected all the way to 20/15, but my night vision was shot. Of course, now I'm beginning to go farsighted. Getting old sucks. :p

@Brian_North , actually I have experienced on a rental Buick in Ohio and BMW has had on their cars for several years already. Nothing like the fancy Pana stuff yet much better than the colored glass popping out gimmick... ;)

I really like what I saw in the Panasonic video. Especially being able to see deer at night. I live in the sticks and have many close encounters of the alarming kind. The cameras can see much more than we can and if the HUD can display this information in an augmented reality way, I would be very happy with that.
