Okay, I'm wondering what Elon meant by this:
Personally, I'm expecting a knick-knack of some sort. Like a special key chain / key card cover.
2. Free upgrade to FSD or Peformance (if D purchased) or Ludi (if P purchased)
3. Special priority for Y
I think it's free unlimited supercharging (my vote), but I suspect they won't say anything Friday.
I am worried they won't say much Friday. But the X delivery event was pretty informative.
I had never seen that, thanks for sharing it!
There was a lot to share about the Model X since it went dark in 2012 and they kept piling on the features.
Model 3 should be short and to the point
Maybe a commemorative jacket or something. Elon never said it would be something for the car. Just something special for early reservation holders. Maybe he'll say what it is on Friday?
That's a big expense unless your thought is that we'd have access to buy whatever the special something is.
I think people should keep their expectations low coffee cup, hat, tee... something along those lines.
remember all the grumbling about the print sent out last summer? we are amongst many expecting a lot for nothing...
This is exactly why my expectation is that it's something that costs Tesla little to nothing.
For a while I thought it would be some kind of trinket. But we already got our drawings. I certainly wish it were some cool paint color or exterior customization. But I don't think that is very practical or likely.
The most logical option, as it will cause no manufacturing delays and has almost no cost to Tesla, is free supercharging.
But I am most sure that there will be no mention of it at Friday's launch. It will just be a Musk tweet in the next few months.
"Tesla" camping chair, to be used while waiting in line for the Model Y. Folds up falcon-wing style.
I love this. Because unlike the 3 I will most definitely be standing in line to order the Y, and not waiting till the next morning to discuss it with my wife next time!
I got your "Something Special" right here in Signature Red:
I'm convinced my wife will want Model Y, so I'm putting in the deposit asap no questions asked.
If she finds another car ... we just made $1,000
"something special" does not mean something expensive - and nor should it.
The previous special was Sig Red which was an optional extra, it still cost money to get.
The "special-ness" came from the fact it was only made available to those folks who still had to pay for it.
I'm betting it will be that kind of special.
Expecting it to be a free gift is unrealistic given the quantities involved.
Around 115,000 people preordered the Model 3 the first day. Lets say Tesla gives everyone a jacket...
115,000 x $10 (Jacket cost) = $1,150,000... Thats quite expensive.
...Or a Mug
115,000 x $3 (Tesla Mug cost) = $345,000
...Or a hat
115,000 x $2 (Tesla hat cost in bulk) = $230,000
Now supercharging... that will be kind of expensive for Tesla.
PLEASE NOTE: THESE NUMBERS ARE VERY BASIC, AND ARE JUST BEING USED FOR ESTIMATING PURPOSES. THE PRICES ARE NOT EXACT, JUST A BASIC SKETCH.
@Kriffic Supercharging cost to Tesla is certainly less than what they charge, and residential rates. And Tesla will soon be moving superchargers to solar power, where the cost is zero.
Solar power costs are not zero though. The panels and batteries big enough to run a supercharger aren't free and their very significant cost must be funded somehow.
Elon did say "something special" not looking too much into it. I figure it would be something unique to the vehicle OR tangible item we get in the mail.
Either way what other company would even THINK about doing something like this for their customers?? They have had over a year to think about and design it so I think they will say something Friday about it⚡️⚡️ Me hopes
