    Hi!

I'm new to this forum and just placed a reservation on the car! I've been a fan of Tesla for a long time and was waiting for the right time for a more affordable option! One big question I have is that Model 3 doesn't have a drivers' dashboard/screen for the speedometer, etc. Is it not safety hazard if you constantly look to the right to the center screen to see the necessary information (speed, energy left, etc.?)

    Thanks!

you can see all the necessary information without turning your head. The speedometer is just beyond the right edge of the steering wheel, can you not see the right edge of your steering wheel without turning your head?

I probably can! Just thought might be getting used to and strenuous to your eyes or something.

But I didn't realize it was right to the edge of the wheel! Thanks!

Mount your phone or Ipad with a speedometer App running, on the centre dash, and put some paper over your binnacle or current speedo.

I tried it for a small journey and actually it works really well. Hardly noticeable after a short while.

      Welcome!

        Welcome to the forum!

One of the most useful tools on this forum is the search feature. Simply type in keywords like "dash" or "single display" and you will quickly find that this particular subject has been THOROGHLY discussed over the last year. Plenty of information, plenty of opinions. Probably enough to keep you busy until you get your car! Also, watch the videos that Trevor Page has put together and you will learn a ton.

Again, welcome to the forum. It certainly is an exciting time to join the family!

        Dan

I can tell you first hand it won't be a problem as my recent test of a Model S I've discovered that I don't really watch the instrument panel at all. Matter of fact, having the speedometer out where I can actually see it will be much better ! Trust that Tesla has thought of everything and will give us what we need and the autopilot information. Besides, if they don't it's something they can fix in a software update.

During my errands today I dropped into my local BMW and Mazda dealers to check out the cars closest in size to the Model 3 and to see what constitutes their ideas for the interior design, finishes and also the trunk space since we're at it.

              Here's my opinion:

BMW interiors have decent quality materials but the designs aren't all that luxurious compared to higher end cars. The 330I sat in was priced @ $47,700 CAD before options. See this price sheet:

              IMG_3841.JPG

As you can see it's pretty easy to bump the price up a LOT if you want options. I asked the sales guy if they had any 320is and they said no. So there goes your base price BMW. Dealers order cars with lots of options to increase margins.

Here's the dashboard of said 330i

              IMG_3842.JPG

While it has marginally soft-touch materials in the easy to reach places it does have hard plastic finishes in spots. I wasn't particularly impressed. Sure it has lot of visual interest but does that equate to "quality"????

              Here's the 330i door:
              IMG_3843.JPG

              Remind of you of anything????

              21 - LKH3j48.jpg

I think one can clearly see where Tesla took their inspiration... I think Tesla's placement of the door release button is ergonomically correct.

Speaking of which, here's the BMW 328i GT. I reminds me a lot of the Model 3 because of the long rear window

              IMG_3844.JPG

Then I went to Mazda and couple of things struck me:

Trunk space on the Mada 3 sedan (12.3 cubic feet) isn't bad but I got the distinct impression the aperture is smaller than the Model 3, at least the alpha:

              IMG_3845.JPG

Lastly, while walking the showroom I poked my head into the new CX-5 and looky what I found...

              A trend towards simplicity

              IMG_3846.JPG

So if you're harping on Tesla because the Model 3 has "small" cargo space, a simple interior, finishes that might not be up to par with other "premium" German cars I have a feeling you haven't visited a showroom in a while :)

I'm just hoping that the M3 vent slot has some method for closing off the vent on the passenger side of the car. My wife is always cold and I'm always hot. :D

I have a car with the speedometer and information at the center of the dashboard to the right of the steering wheel. I have used this car for almost three year. It took me one glance (the first one) to get used to it! In my opinion, that central location just below eye level is a much better location for essential information than taking your eyes off the road, looking down, and peering through the steering wheel spokes. I think you will really like this feature in the Model 3.

plus the example in this photo has the hinges taking up a fair amount of trunk space when the trunk lid is closed.

A coworker has a new Mazda 3 (in that same shiny red) and have seen her trunk - it's not a bad size and certainly would not have called it small

Coming from many, many years in Beemers which have had essentially the same, or similar driver oriented dashboard design for decades, moving to Midnight S≡R≡NITY will represent a paradigm shift for me. Kind of as if I was definitely leaving the nice suburbs of LA to relocate to a sunny, zen-like golden sand beach on an island in the Pacific, with palm trees and one satellite dish for my TV in the middle of the beach... :D

Could be worse... no dish!! :p

YES! Finally, someone else online that has noticed this as well. There's a reason the driver has a display of critical items just below his field of view. It takes a fraction of a second to glance down to your speed, and yet keep the road in your FOV. Think of how many times you have glanced down to the radio or AC control at the center stack, only to look up and see brake lights coming up fast. This is the one big issue I have for this car. And it may force me to choose to get my deposit refunded. I'll see after I get a test drive. By that time, there will be some possible competition from others that can compete with the model 3. ... maybe....

where the information will be on the Model 3 screen will be closer to the windshield than where a traditional speedometer sits behind the steering wheel. you are not needing to look down toward the cupholder to check your speed.
For those doubting the effectiveness of the center mounted screen, I suggest you hold judgement until we've seen the final reveal and/or sat in the driver seat.

if you thought this would be an issue, why would you have put a deposit down in the first place, or if you did before the unveil, why has it taken a year to decide its not what you want?

If you look through some of the numerous pictures of the interior, you will see that the speed indicator is located at the top left side of the screen. This puts it just to the right of the steering wheel and maybe a couple of inches below eye level. I have a speedometer in this location on my current car and love it. In fact this location puts it closer to eye level than the typical location behind the steering wheel. I can't tell you how many times I have been turning a steering and trying to check my speed through the spokes only to look up and see brake lights.

Keep an open mind about this until you have actually sat in the interior of an M3. You might really like it!

@garsh, you nailed it! I have an older version of this Prius model, but the speed indicator is in the same location and the speed indicator on the M3 will be very close to that location. You never have to take your eyes off the road to check speed and other information. The speed is always in your peripheral vision, unlike most speed indicators underneath the steering wheel.

Thinking about the speedometer, its funny, but I rarely check the speedometer because I mostly use the radar cruise control. Set it and forget it! I honestly check to see the number of miles I'm getting on EV (which is next to the speed indicator) more often than any other instrumentation. I love sticking it to the oil industry and I am going to love it even more in my M3 (Mel is going to love my vanity plate! :p)

That's what I said in my post. I'm hoping to be impressed. But I've been "practicing" in my Saab looking at a number on my radio display at approx the same spot, and it's not promising. The road leaves my FOV for that time. I've also paid attention to the other things I track on my dash and how often (speed, mpg, total miles, outside temp, ...) and it's quite often. And as I switch to electric I'm sure I'll be checking my efficiency, regen braking, range, etc... even more often. Plus, the complete dash just looks.... dare I say...cheap. At least integrate the screen partially on the dash perhaps. But a small sub display can't cost that much more. Or at least offer it as an option. I would bet 95% of the buyers would opt in for that option for another... $200.
