    will the Design Studio open?

Elon stated the first 30 cars will be delivered in his tweet. He then went on to say:
    • 100 in August
    • 1,500 in September
    • 20,000 in December.
Here is the real question when do you think the Design Studio opens for the non-board members/early investors/employees (i.e. the rest of us)?

    My best guess is September.

I do hope we get to configure on the 28th, but part of me thinks that it's possible that the configurator does go online on the 28th but not for everyone.

Go to the "What's Next" section your MyTesla page and read it closely:

Your Model 3 was reserved on 3/31/2016. Deliveries will begin in late 2017. You'll be invited to configure based on the date of your reservation.

That last sentence jumps out to me as it indicates that the configurator may not go online at the same time for everyone.

Keep in mind, it's might be limited in scope to geographical areas at first given the ramp being slower than expected. Elon didn't say if the number he mentioned were per week or per month.

    My thought exactly!

They have Tesla and Space X employees to get through, then Model S/X/Roadster customers, then geography.

I can easily see the configurator opening on the 28th, but even as a pre-unveil reservation holder not having access quite yet...

As soon as it’s open for one of us, it’s open for all of us as far as I’m concerned. I just want an end to the question of option availability/pricing, even if I can’t log in and configure one for myself.

I thought it was pretty clear the numbers were per month.

Yes, that's true. Getting pricing is a certainty on the 28th. I really want direct access to the configurator though as that will give me a delivery date projection!

I would tend to agree. If there was any doubt, once he said 20,000 in December that all but confirms the numbers are monthly and in line with his previous stated goal of scaling to 5,000/week by end of 2017.

For other delivery countries, pricing may not even be final, and accepting orders a needless complication. Customers many months down the production path would be taking time from their delivery specialists. That workforce will also start with current capacity and gradually grow with production, I'd say. Fewer option will help, but not much.
Anyway, until they put the D, P and L options in the configurator, or the other rooof styles, etc, pricing can be changed still. We'll get indications in the form of 140 character communiqué's, but I doubt you'll be specing out your complicated setup for Q2 2018 by the 28th.

If I were Tesla, I'd make the configurator available in a limited manner. This who want a RWD car, can request access when their region and res.# are up, but then only so many months to takee delivery. Don't waste Tesla time by starting an order before you're ready to take delivery of what's in production today.

Well I agree with you a little.

I think the configurator will open for US and Canada first (or at least just the US). Other countries will probably wait longer.

They'll want reservations to convert to orders for a few reasons.

    1) Simplification -- having people request to get access to order is a nightmare.

    2) The $1,000 deposit becomes real money and a huge infusion of cash.

I wonder, whether converting the reservations into real cash is worth setting an army of Delivery Specilsts to work that will not be connected to a delivery for say an avarge 5 months to come.

I hope but would not bet on it being open on the 28th. July until October/November production will be employees. The first few hundred might be configured internally as there is going to be very little to chose.

I do think we will get the specs for the vehicle including range for all of the battery sizes and RWD vs AWD. I hope we get pricing at least for the US so people can make choices about what they will wait for. The timing will likely make the full tax credit available to a lot of people and more will be willing to wait.

My guess is configurator opens to everyone on the 28th with all options and estimated availability dates. As you make selections, the estimated delivery date will dynamically adjust but the final option to actually submit/configure/purchase will be greyed out until your reservation date, location, and status (owner/employee) permit it.

I think the "invitation to configure e-mail will be for those who don't obsess over this because the rest of us will be ready to pull the trigger as soon as the queue allows. Hopefully, the greyed out button will have a countdown timer or some other way for us to know our place in line. Also hope that, when higher priority reservationists bypass for a delayed configuration, others will have the opportunity to get an earlier delivery (provided the bypasser doesn't miss out on incentives - within reason).

Good point. The employees are going to take the lion share of optionless cars, it's going to take a while to get the first car to a non-employee. Bu then they have a rate of production that may allow for more options.
If I were Tesla, I'd make really nice embroideries on the chairs and dashboard and to represent it being a Founders edition for those employees that reserved theirs.

I don't like the term "optionless car" as its inaccurate. We already know the first cars are the mid-trim level indicating they have options.

Apologies, TV was my English teacher. I of course meant to express: little to choose. Else I'd said bare base version.

You can't configure in volume until you know final prices. You can't know the final standard option prices till Tesla does. Tesla doesn't know them either, till all the math is done and all the parts vendors have been checked out okay. Timing is everything.

They are not keeping secrets, they actually do not exactly know. The game is on the line. It's fourth and goal from the one. They likely want to know even worse than you do. You never know how the story unfolds until it is over.

I know in general why critics say the roll out is impossible. It's not. I've seen similar things in my day. Then, one day, the machines are lined up and are rolling at an insane speed, the parts bins are full, and that giant guy from West Virginia who once put roof panels on by hand is back hunting, forever disdaining his stint in the auto industry. Stay tuned.

Tesla does not know the parts it would take to build the schedule until they open the configurator up to see what everyone tells them.

As the Stones once put it, "You're not the only one... with mixed emotions."

Sounds like it can never happen, but it does.
