I was thinking that maybe the interior cam on the Model 3 would be used for gesture control (with future software updates, as it is rumored to be inactive currently). It seems like the camera placement is
similar to the gesture control camera found on some of the 2017 BMWs.

Gesture control seems more plausible than facial recognition, which is overly complex just to identify a driver. One would think that Tesla can identify the driver more easily with their cell phone or key card.

As many others have mentioned, an interior cam would be useful for monitoring passengers when using your car autonomously on Tesla's self driving service. Obviously this is in the distant future seeing Tesla's speed of progress towards FSD and self driving regulatory hurdles.

What do you guys think about gesture control on the Model 3? Possible or HUD rumor 2.0.

Interesting notion but it seems the camera placement might not be ideal for that purpose.

Nope. The camera can't see through the mirror. It may be able to watch the driver for inattentiveness and automatic AP takeover (future) or just be a mirror cam for keeping an eye on the (future) taxi passengers for liability reasons.

Neat but also potentially more frustrating than it's worth IMHO.

Most of the time I find voice control more frustrating than it's worth. Gesture control would be even worse. I can imagine getting frustrated with the incorrect or unrecognized gestures and resorting to flipping the car the finger, only to have the car retaliate by scrunching the seat all the way forward and popping the frunk while doing 75 mph down the freeway. "Take that you nasty human!"

Yeah, I think you are right. If that is the only interior cam then it would be very poorly placed for gestures. Anyone know what those vent looking lines are under the rear view mirror? Maybe for airflow for the autopilot cams?

Yep, cooling for the 3 or more cameras/sensors up there.

As a side note, my Volt's camera overheats when I park it facing the sun during our 115-degree days. When it shuts down I have no cruise control. :( So far the backup camera has only overheated once that I've noticed. In that instance I still had a camera view, but the guide lines wouldn't display.

The obvious place for a gesture cam would be in the bezel of the center touch screen (like the cam on a iPad), but looking at all the interior shots of Model 3 online I see no evidence of a camera associated with the screen. If there was one i'm sure someone would have spotted it during the test rides.

Maybe not hand gestures but it could be trained to read facial expressions or read lips. Sarcasm-aware voice control!

I don't want to stir up the waters again like some did last year about a HUD but NVDIA does have something called "Co-Pilot" that can run on the Drive PX 2 computer when Autopilot is not engaged

I think the first application, as @SSonnentag said, is for distracted driver detection. Next would be lip reading and placement of HUD projections for augmented reality.

    It's not for gesture control.

I'm with @SSonnentag - it's for distracted driver detection. It may also be anticipating such detection being legislated as a condition for activation of Level 4 autonomy.

For current research see my post #128 of May 22 in Autonomous car tech thread. (sorry don't know correct way to reference that post).

This thread reminds me... what ever happened to the Porsche and motorcycle helmet HUD hire? Do they still work for Tesla, and if so are they utilizing their talents for the Model Y, the semi truck or some other project?

I was excited initially because I thought they'd have more input into M3, but maybe there wasn't enough time or maybe they did have input. And yes I was one of the HUD hopefuls in the beginning :)

    Any thoughts?

I watch too much Star Trek!

I read gesture control and thought, "Why would anyone want to project a holographic image of flipping off the guy who just cut me off in traffic?"
