With cars ordered Jan 2017 and later, 400kWh (1,000 miles+/-) will be included each year. Beyond that a fee will be charged

    https://www.tesla.com/blog/update-our-supercharging-program

Personally, I think this is a great compromise. I'd plan to use SCs 4-6 times a year, once each way and 400kWh should come close to that.
    What's your opinion?

I also think it is a good compromise. At least Model ☰ owners will have some supercharger usage included in their purchase. I hope the subsequent charges will be reasonable and they should be based on the statement that it will not be a for profit venture. I was planning a Model ☰ road trip once the car was broken in. I wonder if they will allow us to rollover the miles? Thanks for posting this MelindaV!

Great news! I'm quite happy to see this. Electricity costs something so using the Tesla infrastructure should have a fee, gives them the necessary funds to expand the network too. I probably won't supercharge a lot but I have one 5 minutes away and will only have a typical 120v plug at home so chances are I'll be taking advantage of the proximity.

I don't think anyone could say they are surprised by this. I too think it is a great compromise.

So back to what I expect to use, like I said I make 4-6 trips a year (Portland to Seattle - GoMariners!) and there is a SC in Centralia, WA at the halfway point, approx 90 miles from both Portland and Seattle... So assuming 6 roundtrips, 12 one-way trips, and hitting up the SC each time after a full charge at home or overnight at the hotel... If replenishing the 90 miles each time, that would be 1,080 miles of recharge. But in all likelyhood, it would be ¼ to ½ of that. SO could head up to Seattle for 6 round trips by topping off the battery 20 or so miles each trip and still have 750 SC miles available. That would cover the odd work day trip out of town and an extra trip or two to Seattle when the Mariners have games after the first weekend in October ;)

I should also add, in my area, Centralia is the only SC I drive past on a somewhat regular basis. Over the last year, I've gone past it, two well south of Portland and one well east of Portland. There is also a couple new ones on the coast that if I'd been to the beach this summer would have been by, but could see using them too. So IOW, they are not exactly there for everyday use.

So... everybody will have different needs... I just drove 1,500 miles in 4 days driving back & forth to the SW of France... something I am likely to do at least 4 times per year... Yet I'm not going to worry about it... It is always going to be cheaper than 3 full tanks of gas, for sure in Europe!! :)

This is good news as it confirms what the future of superchargers will be. The press is going to have a hay day in reporting that Elon said free forever, which in fact he did. However, as has been pointed out, the free forever comment was directed to the owners of the Model S and X early adopters. I think Elon should have been a little more forward thinking when he made that statement. Surely he knew that once the Model 3 went into production that they would have to set up a pay as you go to continue to support the network.
To be clear, I am not complaining, I fully support this decision and fully expected it to be announced at some point.

So yearly amount resets regardless if you used it or not? Meaning, not added to existing?

that we will not know until more details are released. The blog reads as 400kWh per year, but does not say if that will be added to any still sitting there after a year, or will take the place of. IMO you will get an additional 400kWh no matter what you have left from the prior year.

If that is the case, then long distance vacation trips can be planned for free. Example, Phoenix - San Diego, about 600+mile round trip. With 400 miles left over it would make me plan 2 trips next year easily.

and remember, you likely would leave home with a full charge and potentially charge at a hotel/relative's home on the other end, so your 600 mile RT may only need a couple hundred miles changed by SCs.

I love the new press release on the change to the supercharger rates. I am so behind this model. By charging the regional rates, it makes charging at the chargers no cost benefit versus charging at home, save the first free 400kWh. That will hopefully keep the locals charging at home, which frees up the chargers for those going cross country -- who don't have a local home at which to charge.

I do hope the Model 3 does better than the 1000 miles per 400kWh, or 2.5 miles/kWh rate cited in the article. Maybe a Model X in ludicrous mode gets 2.5 but I was hoping for north of 4 miles/kWh in the Model 3. I currently do 4+ m/kWh in my LEAF. That's a little freeway, a little country highway, and of course, some neighborhood surface streets.

@Harvey Payne , good and encouraging point... Guess I'll downplay that to 3-3.5 miles/kWh 'cause I doubt we'll be able to resist the urge of pressing the 'pedal to the metal' in our Model ≡ more naturally than most people typically do in a Leaf... :)

I believe he was thinking REALLY far into the future. Elon has mentioned having solar panels at these sites. The goal was/is to recharge from the power of the sun. In the short term, we will have to pay. If he is forced to make this a profit driven model in the distant future, then we will continue to pay. :)
