Tesla Model 3: What will the spaceship-like steering wheel of the Model 3 look like?

The final design of the Tesla Model 3 is “pencil down” for over a month now and we all want to know what is different from the prototypes unveiled earlier this year. CEO Elon Musk mentioned some refining of the exterior design and a lot of reservation holders are anxious to know what is the “fix” for the trunk opening.

But what I’m personally most excited about is the interior. Tesla carefully made sure that any promotional picture or third-party photoshoot would not feature the interior of the prototypes, presumably because it will be nothing like the production version. more…

I'm not sure that 400,000 people would be thrilled with a steering wheel that is significantly different from what we are used to driving. Innovation is a hallmark of Tesla but the S and the X still generally drive like a "normal" car. I am excited about getting my M3 but, after seeing the three examples of steering wheels in the story, I'm also a little nervous.

I can't wait to see what it's going to look like. It's driving me crazy!!!! I have seen the 3 examples the OP posted in the article while I was doing the same type of search. I myself would love to have something really advanced and futuristic. However, I know that it has to make 400,000 people happy. So, going with a "Yoke Only" style would possibly run the risk of losing reservations. I happened to stumble across this audi "yoke style" steering wheel concept not too long ago. I have a feeling that the Model 3 Steering wheel and system might be something more like this, What do you guys think?

I don't think Tesla would do the yoke thing. They're great for airplanes but have no place in cars.

I think Elon is referring to the control styling on the wheel and a possible augmented reality HUD for the car. The lack of a center display leads me to think they are going to do some kind of projection system for autopilot information.

I have said this elsewhere, and I know I am in the minority, but I wouldn't mind seeing something that eliminated the top third of the wheel design. I have always hated how it cut into the view over the dash and restricted my view of the instruments. Certainly not going to cancel my reservation either way. I can live with a wheel...as long as it has a Tesla "T" on it!

I totally agree. It would take a lot for me to cancel my reservation at this point.

I have no inside knowledge of Tesla's plans for the "control systems" of the Model 3 but here are a few facts that lead me to believe they are working on something "radical".

    1. They hired the interior designer who worked on the Porsche Mission E concept vehicle that had holographic displays and systems
    2. They hired the main guy behind the "Skully" augmented reality motorcycle helmet
    3. Prototypes were shown without a centre binnacle (gauges)
    4. Tesla engineers confirmed the Model 3 would only have a single horizontal display
    5. Elon said "everything will make sense at the second reveal"
    6. Elon said "the steering and control systems look like a spaceship"
Now, when you take everything above into account you start to get a better picture of what direction they may take given that the Model 3 is indeed destined for full autonomy and that they will not be redesigning the car for at least another 8 years. Given that full autonomy is just around the corder I'm sure that Tesla is designing the interior systems long-term for that in mind. They have a unique opportunity to design the interior and control systems with the future in mind and with a racially new way of thinking about cars.

So having that I have a feeling they may be indeed working on an augmented reality HUD projection system similar to the videos I've embedded below. A system like this would explain how they will display autopilot and speed information given the lack of a centre display. It can also explain the "spaceship" comment. DLP projection systems have become so cheap that they could implement this and still keep the pricing in check.

Watch the videos and you'll see what I mean...

The more I look at this dash set up. It makes me think that it flips up or something. That little peice that is connecting to the top part of the dash on the left corner looks like it does something. Also the front top part of the dash is a whole seperate peice. It looks like it might move some how. I see that the Nissan concept on the OP Article has a similar set up. I know i'm probably way off though. That throws simplicity out the window. image.png

I see what you mean however perhaps you're missing an important fact: Tesla Model 3 engineer Doug Field at the reveal event during test rides said they have a new HVAC system that uses slots and not vents.

Watch this video right at the start for confirmation :

I'm sure that you're right. I remember watching this same video, and your video when you were going over the hidden details on the the big screen behind Elon during the reveal. Still knowing that it still looks like something else is going on with it. A while ago I found this Nissan IDS video and it looks quite similar. I know the design is completely different, but the dash has alot of similarities. Overall you are probably right about it having to do with the new HVAC system. I don't see them being to accomplish both without some problems. I'm definetly not betting against you. You have been right on just about everything with Tesla and the Model 3 so far. Thanks Trev for all that you do for us future tesla owners.

But there are no instruments behind this wheel are there?

I can't see that these kind of steering controls can comfortably rotate more than +/- 90 degrees. So, if we take the usual 2+ turns lock to lock and make it +/- 1/4 turn lock to lock the steering is going to be excessively sensitive.

I saw this posted on TMC by user MissAutobahn a couple of days ago and thought I would share it over here. I think she did an awesome job and love the idea, and looks really clean and would be a good way to implement Augmented Reality HUD Trev was talking about in his earlier posts. Plus, also would explain what that little hinge looking piece does and why the dash is 2 seperate pieces. This would explain why Tesla doesn't want anybody to mess around with the interior too much and give up their little secret:smirk:. She made a good point that this thing could have been already completed and they just didn't open it. Awesome Photoshop MissAutobahn:grin:

According to tesla engineer during the test drive, there will be no other display in M3.

For me, that thing that opens is a display to me or not?

Oh man! How I would love to have M3 do this!
Probably only while it is on Autodrive.
It would make me an even surer buyer! Love it.
