I'm holding a reservation on a 3, but have never driven any Teslas. Going to be in Southern California/Phoenix for a week in late October. Wondering about the practicality of renting an S. Anyone have experience with renting a T? From whom did you rent? How'd it go? Was it worth the expense over an ICE-mobile. Thanks!

I know Enterprise has Model S's available at PHX, and am sure the SoCal airports as well, in their exotic car category. Last time I was there, it was offered as an upgrade, but didn't ask how much.
You can also check thru Turo (the Air-b-n-b for vehicles).

Have a question - Google finds your answer:

Not ready to plunk down $70,000 for a Tesla Model S? Now you can rent one.
Hertz announced Wednesday that it was adding Tesla's signature model to its rental fleet as part of its "Dream Cars" line, which also offers high-end rentals from companies like Ferrari and Aston Martin.

Unfortunately for most of the U.S., the Model S will only be available for rental in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

"should customer demand warrant it, we will consider expanding availability to other locations," Hertz spokeswoman Paula Rivera said in an email.

Rental rates start around $500 per day, plus $0.49 a mile after the 75-mile mark, Rivera said.

It's a little bit sad that the car rental company think that the Model S is an exotic car. I mean don't get me wrong, I think Tesla is the bomb but exotic... I don't know... maybe.
Why does the text have a strike through in the previous posts?

Do yourself a favour and rent, test drive or beg an owner. It's an amazing car.

+1 for Turo if you live close to or are visiting a larger metro area. There are a few owners in Atlanta that rent their Model S on Turo. Definitely a good option to rent for the weekend in order to get a feel for how living live a Tesla will be.

Enterprise is also renting Model S's. I was looking at renting one while we are in San Diego. However I needed to travel from San Diego to Anaheim, going to Disneyland. We're flying into San Diego but out of LAX and you have to return the Model S to San Diego. So unfortunately, that's out now.

IMG_4375.JPG As thread originator, I'm pleased to report that I did rent a Model S in Los Angeles for five days, drove to Phoenix and Palm Springs and just turned it in yesterday. I had a great learning experience with urban and long-haul highway driving, multiple Superchargers, meeting Tesla owners along the was at SCs.

I rented through Turo.com and got my 2014 Model S for $129/day with drop off snd pick up at a private residence.

I'd strongly recommend trying this rental option. It worked well for me and I learned a lot. Good luck

I love the title of this thread! Everytime I see it, I think about renting a Tesla cabin, probably designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

I visualize Solar City PV completely covering the Southern exposure of the Signature Red roof, a bank of Powerwalls to store that electricity for 24/7 usage, and of course the {non-existent, for now} Tesla appliances. They would be of exceptional quality, efficient and of course, very stylish! Of course, a HPWC would be under the carport so my Roadster / S / X / 3 would be on display as I vacationed in the utmost style and comfort.
