True story, @John Edighoffer was there and can corroborate it:

So, while having our little M3OC meetup this evening in Fremont I bumped into a Tesla team member (lot of them come through this particular restaurant) while ordering food.

Made some small talk as I questioned him on his particular shirt he was wearing (Model 3 launch team) and what it meant. He would only say "I work on the car".

He recognized me from my videos and mentioned the segment I did on the NAVDY HUD.

    His comment was "won't work"

I asked him if he meant "on the Model 3?"

    He said "yeah"

I thought about this for a moment and then said to him "I get it, no ODB2 port on the Model 3" with a smile (the NAVDY requires power from the ODB2 port) as it was the only thing that I thought would prevent it from working.

His only response was "you didn't hear it from me"

I gave him a pat on the back and said to keep up the good work, we're all counting on them.

His parting comment on the way out was "it's going to be awesome"

So I take it the car won't have an ODB2 port since it's used for emissions and mechanical diagnostics on ICE cars and I recall Tesla uses their own ethernet type connector in the Model S for this.

It was a really interesting evening with a few people who came by to talk. We even had a Tesla line worker on the Model S join us to talk. He didn't have much to say given he's not on the Model 3 team and it's all very hush hush but he did say the line is almost ready to go in a matter of weeks, Tesla is working really hard on it.

That's weird... the Roadster only has the proprietary port. The S and X have both proprietary AND OBD port... removing the OBD port for a mass market car has the car out of compliance with car regulations.

It would actually also be a bummer since it would enable the best plan B identified to date....

    Unless, we won't need a plan B...? I still care... :D:D:D

If the NAVDY really only gets power from the OBD port, then it shouldn't be hard to wire up an alternate source of power for it.

To be honest, HUD's don't float my boat. I don't understand the huge drama over it :).
I know Americans can be ever so slightly overconfident at the best of times but I love the fact he felt ok to mention that it will be awesome (reads into the "you won't care" tweet)

Cool info, good job Trevor! However... does this mean now that any and all repairs to the car need to be done by Tesla themselves... No sending your car into the "local garage" to have a error message reset or check information from the car... it all has to be done in house by Tesla... more costly? Better information because you take it back to the manufacturer...? interesting.

I don't interpret what the Tesla guy said as "it won't have an OBD port." I interpret what he said is that the Navdy unit won't work on the model 3----------for whatever reason. I think we are jumping to a conclusion. There is something else going on here. Model 3 will definitely have diagnostics capability, but we just don't know how it will be accessed, could be OBD, could be something else.

Boy that Osborne-effect is a b*tch. If they release a feature like HUD in the S/X, people will expect it in the 3 eventually, and likely delay their reservation. If they release in the 3, then they upset the S/X crowd, and Osborne the S/X. I surmise that such a feature will need to be released (suddenly) to all the cars. I hadn't realized how difficult it is to balance customer goodwill and feature release. I do note that the third quarter starts in July, and new changes often appear at the beginning of quarters, after a short line shutdown for maintenance and a upgrade. The good news is we will know most things shortly. Whatever, the 3 will be awesome.

Well that is a potential outcome if any new technology is added to the model 3 not currently available on MS/X. It is my opinion that we are going to see some really exciting things and major announcements coming out of Tesla for the model 3 and the MS/X come July.

Fasten your seat belt, it's going to be a bumpy night!

Anyone know what the law is for the OBDII port? I thought it was specifically required. Is there a loophole if you can do diagnostic on an in car system?

for the sake of powering an aftermarket camera, I hope it is present on the Model ☰
(there are other power options, but seems using a OBDII plug is one of the easier)

I was thinking that perhaps the OBD port is not in the cabin, but rather in the frunk -- so complies with the regs, but is not accessible for use by a Navdy (?).

Yup, otherwise you would be forced to install a separate battery for your dash cam.

I've not looked that far into this yet, but believe there are S owners who have either tapped into a fuse with constant power, or into a onstant power wire. we shall see what those first Model 3 owners figure out :)
