This is probably something simpler, such as failing to properly put the car into park.

I understand the Bolt has an electronic shifter that requires pressing a tiny button on the side to engage the proper drive mode.

So, their explanation of no one being in the car seems that much more unlikely? In their scenario the car would have had to automatically engage into drive and then again engage back into park, as they reported to have found it in park. Seems far fetched. My guess is on the wife maybe being scared to tell her husband that she crashed his new Bolt. Does GM have logs? I doubt it.

in the last "The Tesla Show" podcast, the hosts recapped their recent Bolt test drive. There was a lengthy part of the conversation about this exact thing. you move the shifter but it doesn't actually respond to the move until you press the tiny button.

ETA to add my explanation of a dislike on @InElonWeTrust's post blaming the wife. The husband could just as well be lying to GM and the insurance company as the wife to him. o_O

I'm hurt, you gave me my first thumbs down. I would have blamed the hubby if he was the one that was home and the wife was out of town. Really, I'm just blaming the person that was said to be with the car at the time. I will listen to the referenced discussion but if I understand it correctly, it would need to be engaged by someone, and not able to engage without. The question is who?
