Who has upgraded the trunk lights?

I'm sure someone has mentioned this but I couldn't find it. I ordered the Abstract Ocean trunk replacement lights. There's a plastic ring in the other side of the trunk liner that the light went onto. Does anyone know how far the AO lights will go back on to that ring? BTW, the trunk pic is the difference between factory (left) and replacement (right). IMG_20180612_134458587_LL.jpg

as long as it snaps on to hold the light, it should be fine. there was a video (can't recall from who) on youtube and I think posted here as well talking specifically about that clip behind the trunk liner.

RPM Tesla kind of showed it but didn't show what actually happened. It's not snapping together at all but the light snaps up through the liner but not through the plastic ring. Even taking the light and the ring out and trying to force them together was no good.

Well, figure it out before I get my car. I have a set of AO lights sitting and waiting ;)

I think you just convinced me to order lights for the trunk.

It definitely makes a difference. I wonder if your car is early enough to be before they put in that ring.
Just curious...

Does you trunk look like this?

Or like mine?

I ordered some from RPM tesla 10 business days ago now. I haven't even gotten a shipment notification yet.
I figured the trunk would be one of the best places for upgraded lights. Your photo is sure telling me that I was correct in thinking that way.

It does. Here's with both in. AO took 14 days to get and I'm still missing part of my order. I think they're all pretty busy.

Edit: It took 2 weeks, not 10 days.

I bought my lights from RPM and I have the same issue where it wouldn't fit back into the ring no matter how hard I tried. I just ended up removing the ring and storing it. I think they get the lights from same Chinese manufacturers and just are stamped with their name. It does sit well through in the lining where I'm not worried. My only issue is have one light that flickers. Also for those interested in putting the same lights in the door they're a really tight fit slightly larger then factory where if you ever need to remove it it's a pain. I bought the Tesla T puddle light originally but they made this horrible whining noise. May try a set from AO and see if that doesn't happen.

Thanks. Good to know. I stored the ring up in the trunk liner where it was before (cord running through it). The light seems snug enough for now. The AO puddle lights weren't too bad to install.

BTW, I used to live in Dublin! :)

Thanks just ordered from AO the 3 puddle lights excited to give it a try heard they have great customer service too. That way if these work out I can ship back the defective LED light in the trunk to RPM. Nice very few people know where Dublin, CA is heard 10 years back was pretty quiet city now its so busy.

I am probably gonna order these from AO. But after reading this thread, I emailed them and asked them about the retaining clip in the trunk. Will post if they reply.
But I also asked about the footwell lights. I want to upgrade those to brighter ones but they now have a note on their site that says...

For Model 3, Please note, some of the more recent Model 3 builds are having issues with our lights in the front footwells. Model 3 uses virtual, or solid-state fuses, read more about those here, and we think it's related, they seem to be very sensitive. We are working on a revised resistor design that should resolve the issue, but for now if you want the front footwell lights to work reliably, we recommend keeping the factory lights. All other locations are fine, it's just the front footwells.

Upgrading my trunk lights was the most useful upgrade that I did. The puddle lights are really nice but the trunk lights were so dim you could never find anything at night.

As for the ring, I just removed enough of the liner and pushed the ring until I got a solid snap. Gave the light a little push and it didn't move.

The rings on mine were extremely tight, but I got them snapped on successfully once I got the Vise-Grips out ;-)

I believe those of you with the missing piece of trim have an easy case once someone finds the part number to have Tesla supply that. it looks so much more finished with that trim on.

I'll add to the trunk lights. When I went to the garage last night to look at Niko and see if he had the trim piece I couldn't eve tell there were lights in the trunk and if they came on. Pretty pathetic actually. I like someone has some aftermarket, but just wish Tesla would up those a bit and put something in useful from the factory.

Cancel your credit card transaction and order the lights from AO. You'll get the lights much sooner. ;)
